Planet X bike, Sram Red, £1100
Discussion
Thoughts on this please; http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/i/q/CBPXSLPR/sl-pr... ?!?
I am looking for a new roadie, was going to wait till the new year (next cycle to work window) as my current one will shortely be turned into the winter hack and need replacing.
Then I spotted that planet X, seems very good value?

It's certainly a lovely groupset, although I've read mixed reviews about their frames. I've never ridden one so don't speak from personal experiance.
I was considering buying one to upgrade the components on my Boardman, then moving the Boardman components (SRAM Rival) onto the Planet X and either sell it or keep as a 2nd bike.
There are also plenty of other bargains around at the moment, like the 105 equipped Focus on Wiggle for £999, I know 105 isn't as good as SRAM Red, but the Focus carbon frames do get very good write ups.

Given the groupset retails at 999 there has to be costs cut somehow, even taking 25% markup (complete guess) into account
Take a look at the specs its only the front & rear mechs that are SRAM Red.If you want the full shebang then its £1399:

I've the Rival version & its a peach of a bike.
its cheap which raises suspicion in most people, fair enough but the frames are from a reputable frame bulider made in the same factory as a few more well known brands. they get good reviews and are all over the tt/tri scene. i dont know many people who have a fault with them.
ok, the groupset retails for abouta grand but the trade price is about half that, planet x just cut out the middle man, spend peanuts on marketing and rely on word of mouth and dont furnish every man and his dog with race support....
all that means they can offer quality bikes at half the price of their competitor. consider that the rrp of a regular bike (think special-trek-iants) is about double what it cost the manufacturer and you can easily see that people like planet x just spend less on the non-bike related stuff and make less on profit accordingly...

They are only making 500 of these, which says to me that it's probably a loss leader to get people talking. They'll be making very little money on these (possibly even a small loss) but they'll make it back many times over from the people who hear of them because of it and then buy something else. It's effectively just a clever form of advertising.ok, the groupset retails for abouta grand but the trade price is about half that, planet x just cut out the middle man, spend peanuts on marketing and rely on word of mouth and dont furnish every man and his dog with race support....

didnt realise it was a ltd ed. but its a good point that its a loss leader and as i was thinking "rival" not "red" it is even better value to be honest!....
to be honest, their regular carbon frame builds are brilliant value for money and just as good as frames costing twice as much.

It won't be a loss, someone the size of Planet X just wouldn't bother. Why make 500 bikes at a huge loss, with the hope of selling them all and ending with a small loss. Your efforts are better spent elsewhere. Besides, Plant X are already popular on the club scene so what would they be achieving?
Its a bit rich calling it Red as its only a bit of the groupset (to fit the Red cassette alone would add £160) and not the brakes, but its still damn well specc'ed for the money and will make many a rider quite rightly rush for his wallet.

Goes to show how difficult it is to get a sense of Carbon frame pricing. It dont cost much to stamp out these frames (especially open mould frame where several brands share exact same frikken frame mould except different paint and graphics and vastly different markups.. )
Principias Carbon Weave TT frame goes for 2500£ but you can buy it directly from Axman, the chinese manufacturers for 500£..
But in all honestly carbon is good these days, and I would not wory about PX or any other brand spitting out carbon frames.
Me?.. I miss the olden days when you bought a custom frame buildt on-sight by the grand masters. You KNEW it comes from there.. and not some poxy "MAde in Italy.. But actually made in asia, but assembled/glued and painted in italy"

This is still an (expensive option). I have a custom Enigma frame (along with a couple of Planet-Xs and a Scott), made close to where I grew up in Sussex.Problem is that local labour costs have increased as imported frames have remained cheap.
My wife has a planet-x carbon jobbie with ultegra groupset. Couldnt comment on the groupset but she loves the bike. Says she has no probs with the frame. Seems a few people want to slag off everything planet-x and on-one do. They dont claim to be the best/lightest etc etc as some manufacturers will, but they seem to do what they do well. I.E. budget stuff that is very useable and give good service in our experience.

no idea why people slag it off ,99% of the brands are made in china and sprayed re stickered anyhow including the 3 grand italian frames
It's not just brand snobbery. Some people who have ridden them consider them to be flexy pieces of crap.I suspect some of the hand made Italian stuff is likely to be more flexible than any monococque. It does stop people handing over large swipes of credit card for them.
Having done so, it would be no surprise to hear them slag off the new monocoques.
Quite wrongly, I suspect. I have such a bike (not a PX) and it's light, very stiff and perfect for recreational riding and the odd sportive or club ride out.
I would have no hesitation buying the PX.
