Replacement tyres 700x28C

My OH has a ladies Boardman hybrid, and has just come off it on a greasy pavement. The tyres on it are pretty much slicks with a wee cut in the sides of the tyres. Continental Ultra Sport 700x28C's.

It turns out she was on her way up a slight kerb transitioning from road to pavement and the front washed out. I have told her to be very careful in future about riding up kerbs like this at an angle, she should really lifting the front wheel to get over the kerb.

She is requesting mountain bike tyres but is it worth trying to find an alternative tyre? She rides 8 miles to work and back on rural roads with the odd bit of cycle path.

I think Cyclo Cross tyres are going to be your best bet here, they offer a reasonable compromise between grip and rolling resistance and should be available in the sizes you need I imagine.

No offence but this sounds like user error rather than anything to do with the tyres. Perhaps this book would help:

Cyclocross tyres are designed to grip on mud and on loose surfaces, not on tarmac.

Aside from being less grippy than slicks on hard surfaces, they also wear very fast.

If you want more grip, get gripper slicks.

eta: FWIW I'm currently running Ultremo 28s on my road bike. They're good. Just avoid a tyre that's too hard, likle Gatorskins or Armadillos.

Also, notwithstanding the user error issue, I have to say I love contis. I did 4000 miles with no punctures at all on my last pair, including a 200km audax when the back was running on the orange puncture protection strip. In contrast, I've has 3 punctures on Schwalbe marathons in less than 1500km. I know everyone says Marathons / M+ are best for commuting, but it's not been my experience. I've even has a pin go through M+ and cause a puncture despite what the ad shows. Fuortunately, the tube was slimed, so when I pulled it out and it started to whistle, I just rode off and it sealed.

other issue with cross tryes are they are super soft IME - so you will be replacing them very reguarly...
