Which magazine?

My colleague wants to buy a "hybrid" bike. That is to say, a tough, fast road bike with flat bars suitable for commuting etc.
He wants to see a few reviews and look at some adverts to help him make the right choice. The trouble is, most magazines are either only interested in mountain bikes with articles on extreme downhill, or road bikes with articles on the best leg razors (excuse the deliberate abrasiveness of this statement

Is there any magazine that will deal with hybrid bikes properly that you guys can think of?

You might want to look at Cycling Active or Cycling Weekly or, even better, go to www.bikeradar.co.uk for loads of reviews and opinions.

Just been through this process myself. You need to know how much you want to spend, what surfaces are you going to ride on, and are there any specific items you want.
For example, I wanted hydraulic discs, under £1K (and not necessarily right "up to" £1K either), no suspension, narrow tyres, double chainset (not triple). I wanted it to ride on roads only - I've decided to buy something else for trails.

Sounds like a similar set of criteria. Whyte Portobello. Absolutely in love with it.
I had my LBS equip it with some wider, riser handlebars than standard though. The originals are designed for city use where narrow is better but they just weren't as comfy as I suspected the wider ones would be. They're only a little wider, but with the small rise, really puts me in a good riding position.
