Disc Brakes- Do yours have an operating temperature?

I run a set of Hope Mono M4s on my bike with 183mm rotors. Noticed that after a long uphill climb they squeal for a while on the initial descent until I've ridden them for a bit and it just stops (i.e. got some heat into them).

It was about 3 degrees that day and it never happens in the summer, just on a cold day. So is it because they are cold or is it something else? I never get oil anywhere near the disk/pads so doubt they would be contaminated.

Are there any sorts of pads that work better in the cold? I'm running the standard hope pads.

My mono M4's used to need a bit of heat in them to bite properly(original pads)- this was cured with some aftermarket pads.

Any particular sort? Or just any other pads but Hope!?

Superstar Components Kevlar pads on both my bikes are a revelation! Old hope C2 brakes and new Hope M4 and they are MILES better than the hope standard or sintered pads. Last well and once bedded in they transform the brake. Highly recommend.

thats interesting, after reading MBUK and all the other mags I had the impression every superstar component was tat.

Might have to check those out.

I've been running Superstar pads on my XTR discs for 6 months or so now, and no problems at all (went for the Kevlar versions), also bought their ceramic headset, which (touch wood) so far has been fantastic.

For the money, I'm really pleased with their stuff.

Having said that, my brakes do seem to work better with a bit of heat in them, though that was the same with the Shimano pads that I had before.

I have these pads- they are far better in the dry, great bite and progressive. Not that good in the wet though(Certainly worse than OEM)

I'd love to be able to get six months out of a set of pads. i'm going through a set of sintered Goodridge pads every thursday night in the winter months. i have tried loads of different compounds and makers but the gritstone is just wearing them to the backing plates in just a few hours.

Drum brakes anyone?

1 night!!!
I used to do a lot of freeride and downhill. My original(front) pads lasted around 4 years, and I only replaced them as they were starting to break apart. I'm still on my original pads at the rear, I reckon i've head them nearly 5 years.

It may be worth looking into harder compounds if they are wearing that quickly!

Yes - can confirm that when riding in Verbier I got the brakes to boil, and not work on a daily basis! Quite scary at times! Not that helps you at all...
