Carbon Frame - Snapped

Not mine but my mate's just shown me his Marin carbon frame, his road bike so not under any great stress. A clean break.
At just over two years old it's still under warranty so hopefully they'll sort it for him.

Also does he not clean his bike?

MIne gets a wipe down every week due to the 100 or so miles i put on it in a week.

1. Just happened, he say's it didn't quite feel right and discovered it when he removed the rear wheel and gears, it still rode somehow!
2. Rather skinny actually, those are his legs in the photo.

So the bit that failed (the drop out) wasn't carbon?? Looks like an ally fatigue fracture, wonder if it had been dropped and bent at some point previously??

Is that the rear dropout where it failed?

That is a bit dirty for him actually, he'll normally spend a whole day cleaning it. Every gear cog and screw will come apart, even takes the brake cables out of their sleeving and greases them!

He's had it from new, never been dropped or bent, he keeps it indoors and always insight when using it (as long as he looks downwards )

Its the aluminium lug that's broken, not the carbon frame.

Well spotted though. It's clearly the lug that's failed on that one.

I've done testing on similar aluminium-carbon bonding (i.e. similar sort of diameter/CSA), and if the bond is done correctly with the right adhesive it's always the aluminium that fails first, not the carbon or the adhesive.
