does this seem about right / over the top / rubbish choice.

You won't go far wrong with any of that, I bought a pair of the 3/4 length dhb's a couple of weeks ago before they hiked the prices up, literally within 24 hours of my purchase they had gone from £40 to £46.99 - but I have to say I am really impressed with the quality and comfort, the pad is excellent. The Roubaix fabric is a bit thicker than normal lycra but I wouldn't say it's a winter fabric, more of an early spring/autumn - from ~ 5c upwards. I'll be buying another pair (but full length this time) after Christmas. My only criticism would be that it could do a bit more reflective material on the backside or legs.

As for jackets I normally carry this stuffed in my back pocket as it packs down very small and it's water resistant so ok for light rain/showers
