Upgrade suggestions for my old Trek 7100 FX

Hello all,
I've been using this old hack since 2002 or thereabouts, primarily for commuting. Overall it's good enough but I would like to upgrade a couple of bits to make it a little more pleasant to pilot. Primarily, I’d like to change the gear selectors and the brakes. The standard gear selectors on mine are clunky to use and, on the down-shift, have overtly long travel. I’d also like to change the brakes for something a little more slick and quicker.
As this bike has paid for itself umpteen times over I’m not too worried about chucking a few bob at it!
What would you recommend?

Get it a good service at a local bike shop, if it needs more than a few medium term parts like cables, brake blocks maybe a cassette and chain, then you'd probably be better of getting a whole new bike.
Once you start running into near enough a whole group (chainset, shifters, brakeset, chain, derailer, cassette, cables) and possibly wheels it would cost you a similar amount to get a similar brand new Trek Fx hybrid.
Edit:- Careful this can be a slippery slope, you'll find you have spent £1,000 on brand new parts for a bike that cost I don't know maybe £400 brand new in 2002. The issue with your shifters is probably your cables, so could be a fairly easy and reasonably cheap fix, the best cables available for a flat bar/MTB (XTR)are only £30 a set.
