Advice needed on MTB wheels

Hello Bike people 
I'm a bit new to the biking lark as a serious hobby. I have got a shiney newish mountain bike which I want to use for training on a indoor bike trainer, as well as belting around off road.
I have found I am a outcast at the group sessions however because my knobbly mountain bike tyre makes a lot of noise on the roller. I am not going to buy a new bike, the bike I have is perfectly good for this training, apart from the noise!
So, a different tyre would sort that out but I need a second wheel and tyre so I can swap them over just for the training sessions.
SO, what to look for?
Would any wheel do or does it have to be a mountain bike special wheel (my wheels are 26")?
If buying second hand what checks should I make?
What sort of tyre to go for? (I have a spare inner tube).
Are front and rear wheels different; I have a cassette spare that is new and I can add to a wheel but do only rear wheels have the mounting or pre cassette are they the same.
I don't want to spend too much cash; as a bike owner I budgeted that the money had already been spent for this hobby!

I would just get a lightweight, cheap 26" rear wheel (with cassette and skinny, slick tyre) off somewhere like Chainreactioncycles. The hubs are different between the front and the rear, that being the only difference.
Changing a cassette over requires a cassette tool and isn't something I'd like to do to often, hence just having another cassette on this 'training' wheel.
If you have V-brakes, make sure you get a rim that is suitable.

Ebay list many cheaper end wheel sets that would be good enough if your running static on a roller.

Obviously edit search for your required speed cassette and as canadianscott said weather you have v-brake or disc brakes. (although do you really need braking on a roller??)
