Cube bikes?

Not sure about your price bracket but...

My Cube Ltd Race (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=57167) is very very good. Also has the best spec for the price.

there are a good few dozen bikes around £800 worth a look. what mountain bike magazine is worth a read just for the specs at the back, not that clued up on current spec hardtails but specialized, trek, giant, cannondale, charge and scott are a good starting point.

I've got a Cube Acid 2010. Seems very nicely made to me. When I was looking last year, there was massive choice around that price. Generally speaking though, where one bike is better speced in one area, it'll be less good in another at that price point. As far as I could tell, Cube seemed to come with a good drive train, at the expense of a poorer fork. I think people more knowledgeable than me would suggest going for a better fork is the wiser choice.

The Boardman Team FS is now down to £799 - you pretty much can't get a better bike for the money...

Would have said a Boardman but the Voodoo Bokor also gets great write ups and is only £750 IIRC.

Except that the Boardman has a higher spec AND is full suss, vs the Voodoo being hardtail. If you want hardtail then the Boardman Team still has a better spec than the Voodoo (Elixir brakes vs. Juicy, Reba fork vs. Recon, etc) and is only £80 more at £680, the Voodoo being £600 for the outgoing 2010 model (which is better spec'd than the 2011).

As has been mentioned - I think they're much of a muchness, but I couldn't find a Cube stockist near me, which swung it for the Genesis.

Most hardtails at this budget are similar yes, but A Cube and a Genesis Core will be very different bikes, Don't just buy on the specification as it doesn't tell the whole story. The Cube (and Boardman also) has a traditional XC geometry with long stem, 100mm forks and a steep head angle, wheras the Genesis comes with 120mm forks, short stem/wider bars and a slacker head angle.

It depends on what sort of riding you do, but the Genesis will be a much more accomplished trail centre hardtail, they always get rave reviews and are nicely built with a classic appearance brought about by the lack of hydroforming and simple graphics (plus some useful features like an external threadless headset, forward facing seat-tube slot and crudcatcher mounts... all that are not immediately obvious)

The spec on the Cube is marginly better on paper (and the visuals very much at the other end of the scale) and is a nice bike for the money but the Core range is very well thought out (i.e they havn't just stuck an XT rear mech on, but instead spent the money on good Rockshox Coil forks which is where you want the budget to go really)....Yes I will admit to owning one (2010 Core 40) but I deal with both brands at work and they represent good alternatives to each other, it depends what you want from the bike really.
