21.5" here on an Trek 6000 series hard tail mtb, I'm 6'2" and it is too big for me, I've had to reduce the stem to 60mm to get it about right and the seat is pretty central on the rails, I got it in the end of season sale for £200 off and it was the only one they had left in Evans where I had £500 worth of vouchers at the time.
If I was choosing again and had the option I'd go 19" and still hope for a sub 100mm stem as anything longer with wide bars makes it feel like you're steering a boat.

Depends on the leg length and how many miles you're planning to do IMO.
I'm the same height as you with long legs. I tend to ride an XL or 25" frame on a road bike as I find that my back is too bent on a smaller frame. I have an old Ti frame which is the equivalent of L and whilst it's more manoeuvrable it becomes very uncomfortable very quickly and is no good for day long rides.

I built a few for particularly tall guys. Tall guys on massive regular bikes look daft - but when you see them riding a 29'er they 'fit' just right, its like an average 5ft 10 guy riding any old medium sized frame.

Cheers for the replies guys, perhaps in the short term I'll just play about with some of the components to see if I can get a little better fit. Pity, I had talked myself into that 20" Trance x advanced SL composite frame with RP-23 for a 'grand'... Boo!
I've not voted as I'm "only" 6'1 with 33" inside leg but went through something similar.
I previously rode a 20"(L) Giant Reign and too found it a bit unwieldy, so I bought a near-identical 18"(M) frame from ebay, swapped all my bits over including my better shock, then punted the L frame on (making a £100 profit in the process). The medium was a MUCH better fit for me and I was a lot happier riding it. It's now gone though and replaced with a 46cm Lapierre Spicy (which I think is close to 18") - I'm just happier on smaller bikes.
On 29ers, I'd strongly trying one. My regular bike is a 17.5" Gary Fisher Rig 29er and I love it. I run a long seatpost (410mm Thomson layback) and am probably at the limit of the bike's size, but it handles incredibly well. I've tried a mate's identical-but-19" bike back to back with mine and preferred mine (not surprising though I guess).
I certainly seem to prefer smaller bikes as my other ones are an 18" steel MTB hardtail and also a 17.5" 700c-wheeled commuter. It's just what I prefer.

Yeah, I think that's what led me to this really. I used to have a Large mountain bike which I could chuck around trails, tight switchbacks, jumps, hops etc. But this XL is like riding a 5-bar gate...I previously rode a 20"(L) Giant Reign and too found it a bit unwieldy, so I bought a near-identical 18"(M) frame from ebay, swapped all my bits over including my better shock, then punted the L frame on (making a £100 profit in the process). Depends on what your mainly riding or if you want multiple bikes, my main use is for XC and open trails, For that it's great, stable, comfortable and fits well for hrs in the saddle at a time.However on the occasions when it's a little more extreme its size does bring short comings.
The next bike will be a smaller FS for singletrack and more extreme XC riding but still nothing like DH or Freeride, and I think I'll hang on to the current steed for winter work/more relaxed XC.
I'm 6'4" and I've had a number of 20" GTs and a 20" Orange 5 that have all been perfect. My brother is a couple of inches taller than me and has ridden the same frames, although the Orange is a little too small.
As mentioned though it varies from brand to brand, but I reckon you're better off going smaller rather than larger.

When you say big and un-wieldy, do you mean frame height, or stretch to the bars?
I'm just under 6 foot, and previously had a Trek witha 56cm frame, that always felt like a really big stretch to the bars, and TBH I never really felt comfortable riding it.
I've now got a carbon framed Willier, also a 56cm frame, the biggest difference between the two, being the lentgh of the top tube. On the Willer, the top tube is about 3/4 of an inch shorter, and compared to my old Trek, it's 100 times more comfortable to ride.
I guess what I'm trying to say is, the frame geometry is different from one manufacturer to another, and one 56cm frame is not neccesarily the same another from a different brand. Maybe try some bikes from another manufacturer in the same size as you have now, and see how it feels

I'm 6'8" and ride a Trek 4500 in the biggest frame size they do! I think it might be 24" but thats crazy big.
Its definitely a better fit than anything I'd ridden before but I do think there must be a more agile solution out there. Its a pig round tight switchbacks and I feel like my centre of gravity is on the high side on fast downhill sections.
Not sure what to go for in future.
