Do we really need side shows at the pod ?
Discussion
Does anyone else on this forum think that side shows such as flybys and airobatic stunt shows do anything at all to enhance your average drag race fans enjoyment at the pod ? i dont have a clue what sort of fees santa pod pay to have these these side shows but i think that money could be put to better use like bumping up the racers round money and winners money .

Drag race fan? possibly not (Though the Blades are very good, and the comedic value of the leader of the parachute display team being Kenny Everitt should not be underestimated)Paying punter who make up a high percentage of the gate, possibly a first time attender, perhaps with kids? Yes, they love all that stuff. Its part of the total experience.
Remove elements of the entertainment package and gates will drop. This will reduce the prize pot from current levels and reduce the funds available to further improve the venue.
Mr C., sorry I missed you this weekend, I saw the Broomster a few times but never actually tore my sorry a$$ from my spot on the bank to move the 70 metres or so, to come say hello, sorry mate. So back to the sideshow thing.... the Spitfire (or was it a Hurricane ?) was outstanding I thought. I saw the Titan the Robot show on Saturday too and was impressed, the equipment must've cost a fortune and some of the throwaway gags were wasted on kids ! Man of the match though was the drunk who tried the Rodeo bull, fell out of the ring before he even touched the bull.. quality.

I been going to watch drag racing for a fair few years now and im there only for the racing but do enjoy some of the side shows that maksar diesel lorry is awesome other than having transmission problems then the brakes locking it was awesome but i completly agree racers prize funds need to be severly increased but as previous less people through the gate less money so i think its trying to find a happy medium but what a turn out for this weekend huge crowds and an icredible four days of racing
It may not bring anything to the event for hardended Drag Racing fans BUT if only hardened drag racing fans turned up there would probably be no drag racing as its the family/occasional visitors who help to pay the bills
We may not like it but its a financial fact of life that we need these type of visitors to come to events and if they come because of the racing and the side shows [ if it rained and they go home having seen nothing then they are unlikely to come again] and go home having had a great day out them so be it. live with it.

Yes and No really. Yes we need them to bring people in to increase money, no because then true die hard fans dont go for that. Need to stop all the delays and messing about between the cars run seemed to be alot of that this weekend, another bad move was letting eric teboul run before the night session knowing that we were running out of time.
Personally I feel as though the sideshows are a great addition to the overall experience for the first time visitors. They will then come back meeting after meeting which can only be a good thing. If you don't like the side shows then don't watch them, stick to the track and watch the sportsman racing (which is what I do).
As for the parachutist display I thought it was a nice way to remember the events in America 10 years ago.

Most definetly not in the States as so much is going on in topfuel. Santapod maybe, but I think its gone well over the top.

That has to be right. I am sure Santa Pod would have stopped doing them if they had no commercial effect. The place must make a profit to survive, otherwise it goes bust. What good will that do the racers?Put another way, look at the crowd at a National event, even with a good pro mod field etc and see if you think that's enough to generate sufficient revenue to improve prize money, pay for the event expenses, pay for improvements etc.

Its sad but the modern brit expects more these days. I was happy just watching drag racing when I was a kid nothing else.Put another way, look at the crowd at a National event, even with a good pro mod field etc and see if you think that's enough to generate sufficient revenue to improve prize money, pay for the event expenses, pay for improvements etc.

If any of you can do a better job than the current team, then Im sure Keith Bartlett and Caroline Day would be delighted to hear from you...
Nail, hit, head.Lewy I don't know who you are but I'm pretty sure you've never run a drag strip, or had any involvement within drag racing? Your comments are at times very destructive.
I could quite happily live without any of the extra attractions, and I could also live with only a quarter of the people on the bank, but sadly drag racing can't happily live with that and would not survive.
I'd rather have me, me and 15,000 clones of me on the bank and watch racing in an atmosphere where I didn't have to put up with big-mouthed know-nothings in one ear, pot smoking chavs up my nose and hundreds of slobs who can't be bothered to deal with their rubbish, have no respect for the national anthem, have no pride in their country and are more interested in a bird called Stella than what's going on in Andy Carter's clutch can. Sadly I don't think its likely that that is going to be the way forward for drag racing in the UK any time soon either!
