Whole Lot a' Shakey Goin' On
Discussion
I'd like to get on down to Shakey again this season as It's been far too long since I attended. The thing I like the most down there is the atmos', the close knit friendly, family feeling you get from the place be it from the racers and crews or the staff and club. You also see cars at Shakey that you don't see at the Pod, long time local and loyal racers for whom SCR is the home track. It reminds you that there's more to British drag racing than just good ol' Santa Pod which can come as a pleasant surprise to the less adventurous spectator if they make the effort to get down.
What scope is there for future development? I take it that the armco guardrail is a barrier (i know, nevermind) to some of the bigger classes appearing there. If this is true and it's the only stumbling block I really hope they can get it sorted so we can see some great pro class races at a different track. MSA Pro Mod has to be the fave thing to watch for many, no doubt it would be a big draw down at Shakey.
Anyone have the lowdown?
Loads of luck for the Spring Nationals BTW, I hope they get a bumper crop of racefans.

The biggest bar to development at Avon Park is the Sodding great gas main running under the banking. Because of this fifty percent of the potential spectator areas are closed to the public. Of the remaining areas alongside the track a large chunk is taken up by the access to the fire up road from the pits. That means that if more than about three thousand people attend the stands are full. If you consider that potentially a thousand of those could be racers, crew or people on racers tickets , and the financial model falls apart.
I love Avon Park and have the greatest respect for the work everyone does there. Its a great track run by great people who are utterly hamstrung by the situation and the location.
Controversial comment warning...
Give it two years and the owners will be able to sell the place for development. They would realise enough cash to build Tierp 2. I bet they don't though...

Are the owners the owners of the whole site or just the racetrack? Also, the banking on the left, is that not viable for spectator use, or the banking further down on the right side? And how come it got re-arranged so dramatically with the stands and pits moved from one side to the other.leffehoegaarden said:

Refer to the first part of my post. there is a chuffing great gas main under the bank and the area beyond. That's why it isn't used.RTFP

The gas main is further away from the drag strip than you think, the reason the bank is there is because os Stratford/Warwick council want to prevent any further noise pollution in the village to the rear, which thus prevents any further stand accommodation.
but wouldnt a gaspipe-free banking stay put but be available to spectators a'la SPR?Gassing Station | Drag Racing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
