(I know there is another thread on this in the P&P, but this is a drag specific one).

Interesting set of progs these, both Sky's 'Long Way Round' and tonights offering, having crossed to the Beeb, 'Long Way Down'. Also interesting to see Russ Malkin still heavily involved in the production and organisation of the trip. Younger readers may not remember that Russ was, for a couple of years, the 'face' of the FIA/UEM televised coverage of Drag Racing. Whilst his style at the time wasn't to everyones taste, it is still good to see 'one of our own' doing well. His style has certainly matured, and I wish him well.

Does he still come to the track at all? I see Charley Boorman was with the Kalitta's this weekend at Vegas. I wonder if Russ helped put the deal together?

Russ always used to hit the IBIS hotel bar at Wellingborough and the last time I saw him was.... 2003 finals, definitely (consuming heavily with other leading drag racing personalities, as I recall..) and maybe 2004, but the memory cells might be twitching, here. He was very visible at the track whenever he was there and has been most inconspicuous by his absence, since. If he's been there, he's been fully VIP'd and out of sight, but I doubt it somehow, since he hooked up with Ewan and Charley. But I may be wrong..

Long Way Down was sponsored by Mac Tools who supplied all the tools required to keep the bikes and support vehicles on the road. So I would think that would be the only link with drag racing. Mac Tools obviously wanted to highlight another of their sponsorships, in much the same way they have done with those of Jesse James and Chip Foose in the past.

Have you read the Long Way Round book? Tells a somewhat different story of the relationships between Ewan and Charley, and the support crew headed by Russ Malkin, to the TV release. Makes an interesting read especially in light of doing a second trip with the same crew.

All I can add to this thread is a verbatim exchange:

"You spelt Peter Schofer's name three different ways in one programme"
"Yes, but it's only him who would notice"
