sbc dart or normal 4 bolt block ?
Discussion
As some of you might be aware im trying to find out which engine will suit my needs, A question for all those knolagable racers.
I would like an engine that is between say 520 - 620 hp. I would like the option of using gas on top of that aswell if needed and as i have a full set up i might as well. Do you think i would need a dart block or would i get away with a 4 bolt mains. Ive heard of some people that 4 bolts will only take 550 then of others at 650 hp. If i was running up to around 700 hp with gas what would i need ? Dart or 4 bolt ? Thanks in advance Adam.

If you can afford the Dart block, go for it - I'd only ever use a stock 4 bolt block if I had to. The general build is far superior than the stock block, and has some useful features like priority mains oiling, billet caps (an option most of the time), all of which make for a stiffer block that helps the associated bottom end parts last longer.
A stock block would handle the power, for a time. Long term though, IMO it would work out more cost effective to go with the aftermarket block.
Hope that's of some use, Mr. Knight will be the chap to talk to regarding the ins and outs of a Dart block build

I was going for a dart block then there seems to be a lot of engines that are for sale and running decent power and not dart blocks. Thats why i have thought about a 4 bolt mains, But since you say that then i should stay with what i was after in the first place. Thanks.
Luke, Which dart block !! Is there different types ?? Or do you mean new or 2nd hand ? The one i had in mind first of all was the one from real steel it was a 427 sbc with dart block, forged pistons, I beam rods(i think) and forged crank for £3300.
Would it be any good or was i barking up the wrong tree ?

Our bbc was 4 bolt mains and a standard block (block filled) we ran that for 11 years and ran loads of 7.1's on it and best of 7.031 at 191.33mph in the end it was tired but it did the job well.Luke, Which dart block !! Yeah dart sell few blocks as far as i know, the alloy one is about $5000, good iron one is nearer to $2800 and im sure there bottom end block is $2200 so go for the best iron one if new.
No way you need ally other than weight, for what you intend on running anyway.
If you find a good and i mean good 4 bolt sbc and spend the money on rotating assembly thats the way id go. no point having a top block with a crap crank.
are you definetly going small block??? you can easily get 500hp from a bbc. I kknow you have got sbc heads but these can be sold/swapped etc.
Plus you will get more torque with bbc.

I am staying the sbc route as my little tiny jeep wont accomendate a bbc. There is nowhere for it to go but i will beable to get a sbc in just with a very very tight squeeze and some alterations. It weighs less than a ton so dont reaily want the engine to weigh half as much as the vehicle.
