what bearing size?
Discussion
hi al
im after abit of advise, Ive just bought a new crank (well used but in good nick!)what bearings sizes should i go for? ive just had a measure up of the jrnls and found the below, the crank has a standard stroke (3.48) eagle 4340 material for my small block 350 chevy.
Mains
1, 2.4486
2, 2.4482
3, 2.4482
4, 2.4478
5, 2.4478
Big ends
1,2.0988
2,2.0990
3,2.0992
4,2.0990
i understand the standard size for a 350...Mains-2.45"-Rods-2.10" shall i just use standard bearings?
many thanks for your time

You need to measure the housings. That will tell you what bearings you need. There's std,.001 smaller and larger. Not sure if they even do .002"
Those crank sizes are std on both, but you'll only know what clearance they'll give if you know what size the hole is that the journal will be sitting in....

Chevy 350 main journal sizes;
1-4 2.4483-2.4493 5 2.4478- 2.4488
Rod journals
2.0990- 2.100
I would go for 1 thou over bearings on the mains. What rods have you got? If they are Eagle go for the same on the rod bearings.
The only way to know for sure is to use a dial bore gauge to measure the housings with the bearings in them. E bay is a good place to get one. Get 2-6". Then you can do your piston to bore clearance as well.(There are some as I type, £32)

When Frosty said housings he meant the housings with the bearings in them. It's not his fault, he's from Birmingham you know! Those crank sizes are std on both, but you'll only know what clearance they'll give if you know what size the hole is that the journal will be sitting in....
