It is Chris Andrew driving one of Knut's fuel cars.

Chris had backing from Prolong but only made this one pass.

I think it was The 2004 Main Event?

2nd Qualifying session of the 2005 Main Event - Chris had not attempted a run in the 1st. Chris appeared for the 2nd qualifier on the Sunday as well and qualified #9. Only Joran Persaker qualified lower yet came in as alternate on the Monday.

Here's the excellent shot caught by Ivan Sansom, published on DRO about 2 minutes after it happened. Well, it was published mighty quick, anyway!

I was refering to the superb series his other half, Rose Hughes, took of Keneth Soderstrom's bump a year or so before Ivan took that one. As he didn't hit me when I saw him this morning I assume he hasn't read this thread yet.....

This type of shot can be done with a second hand camera say for instance a Canon T90 manual focus and a second hand 200mm telephoto lens cost under £400. The main thing is no barrier or people in the way. Drag racing photography is not that hard as long as you have access to all areas.teacher

ahh yes but any old todger can take photos but to do it well it another thing all together. Would wager money on the fact that I i gave you my camera set up you wouldnt even be able to produce a in focus image. let alone something semi respectable

Probably true. Digital photography is wonderful in many, many ways. But I miss the fact that my old film camera had lenses with a horizontal split, and the two halves aligned when it was in focus. These days, with a modern DSLR, autofocus isn't always good enough for much of what I do, and there isn't enough feedback to allow the user to manually focus it correctly either :-(

you can buy ground glass focusing screens (the bit that has the split) for most modern DSLR's allowing you to old school focus. Never really had any issues with auto focus not being fast enough it starts to struggle in less than 4 lums but at that point I can normally switch to one shot focus and allow the IR assists to give me focus.

When I had most people one of my cameras they struggle to engage the autofocus systems and due to the fact its normaly shooting at f2.8 all they end up with is pictures of a creme blur

  • By day, Kestral tunes fuel cars.
  • By night, he tells some of the best photographers in European drag racing that what they do is easy.
  • So far, I've seen him prove neither.
  • The quest, for the truth....continues.

The shot is exciting all the flames ect but that's it. All that would be needed is something like a second hand canon T90 (shutter priority)with a 200mm FD lens £400 of Ebay.500th second f5.6 Fujichrome 100.Peace of P***. Digital photography makes no difference except the fact you can cheat.bow

Being near the object is the biggest advantage, the lens quality required in a 400mm vs a 50mm is extensive and expensive, sure you CAN get 400mm lenses for £200 but they will never be the optical quality of a good 50mm which would be using a much better aperture/depth of field combination and even maybe film speed

A second hand Zenit B or E with the 50mm Leica lens up close will trash a cheap long tom lens 400 yds away

some Zenits came with Hasselblad lenses I think - even better
