"Rumour" and "as things stand" is it definite?

I would imagine Tog put that article up to stop the rumours rather than fuel the fire.

You read my mind, thank you smile One fears a certain inevitability about this situation but we'll see what happens.

The best scenario is of course full throttle full quarter, but which would you guys consider the worse scenario of these two: prescribed quarter mile and racers shut off at 1000 feet anyway, or prescribed 1000 feet with a speed trap so you at least get genuine ETs/speeds over that distance?

Another thing to bear in mind is that, like it or not, this 1000 feet thing is (excuse the pun) being driven by the racers and it's their butts on the line and their money.

I don't believe for an instant that in a race scenario racers would shut off 320ft early - it'd be too tempting to 'accidentally' shut off a bit late and win. I'd rather see full throttle full quarter mile Top Fuel racing, if there is no option to do that then bring on the Funny Cars! Plenty of other classes go all the way (OK, I can see too many puns off the back of that...)

I'm not entirely convinced about the money thing, since when did people race to save money? Yes 1000ft (or 990) is cheaper on parts, but then again so would racing to 800ft, or 660....or if you stay in bed it won't cost a penny, where do you draw the line? Reduce the downforce a touch or something similar, if they can't stop the tyres spinning they can't push the motors as hard. Anything but cutting the distance, it's already a sad state of affairs that fast doorslammer racing appears to be turning in to an 1/8th mile sport. I know it's easy to sit and talk about cost reductions and the like but everyone dealt with the costs before the option or idea of running to 1000ft came up, that's all I'm saying.

I know I'm not involved in top fuel racing in any capacity but I don't buy the saving money thing at all, the cars just get pushed harder for that 990ft, NHRA cars are turning nearly 330mph over the 990 already, tell me that engine isn't being abused as much as it would be on a 4.5@330 proper distance drag race. Yes thats NHRA but FIA racers are still going to get it all they can, because they want to win, simple as.

I am sure that B Jarrett esq could answer the above points about costs, although he already answered exactly the same question on UKDRN some time ago. Bob?

Yes I did give my views on the UKDRN site (1000ft Top Fuel & Funny Car Racing) but the thread was curtailed by the Crazy Horse's book subject. My view is the finish line is at 1320 and that is where we intend to run to.

I know I've been out of racing of any sort for the last 8 months but wasn't the idea of the 1000ft race brought in as safety issue after the death of Scott Kalitta et al?

I'd rather race over 1320ft but if I had to race over a 1000ft or 660ft I'd try just as hard to win so other than the neglible cost of the fuel saved in running a shorter distance I can't see it being significantly cheaper other than extreme engine damage that could happen at either end of the race.

With the greatest of respect to Tog and co at ED, whose post of the subject was crystal clear IMHO, it would be nice to see the drag racing community, just for once, wait and see what the powers that be decide, rather than all the conjecture and guesswork - but then this forum would be like a graveyard without that, lol

Yes, extreme engine damage can happen at either end of the race. But (particularly with nitro cars) it's much more likely to happen at the finish line than the start line. It's true that there have been some spectacular start line incidents (Doug Herbert, Chris Andrews, Micke Kågered, for example), but top end fireballs are far more common. Sometimes that's just a loose oil breather or similar, but it's also going to indicate damage a fair amount of the time.

"Drag Racing - an acceleration test between to vehicles over 1/4 mile..."

next week, the 2012 olympics will have blunt javelins, one foot high hurdles, paper discus and running shoes must have bendy spikes....

news just in - F1 to have 5000 rpm rev limiters, airbags, and big rubber strips like fairground dodgems, just in case.

if that was the case would that be the same for the fuel fc because i am going in september to see showtime run a 4 an thats a 4 over a quarter not a thousand foot ..but glad to read that it is going to be a quarter mile ..if they want to make drag racing safe why not shorten it to 60 feet or just get all the drivers to meet up and use the reaction time gizmo i seen them playin with in the pits

now your just being picky.....lol

making "drag racing safe" is a contradiction in terms surely?

1/8 mile or 1/4 mile, not the 990ft "1000Ft" please...
