What about this beaut of Smax's clutch letting go
The interesting thing about that photo is that from the start line, we couldn't see any of the sparks at all, as they were hidden behind the cloud of smoke. It was only when we got it back to the pits and took it apart that we realised the extent of the carnage. It wasn't pretty...Great Thread, when I have more time I will also put one or two photos up.
Regarding the "Badboys Imagin" Kim Reymond pic (on top in Jon C´s post),
Martin Grosse-Gelderman (the best german lens) summed it up when the photographer showed his shot
just half an hour after the run in the media center :
"The photo of the decade - from the run of the decade!"
So much drama in one shot, the broken front spoiler has already lifted the wheel with its up-flipped left side,
the whole car right on the edge of desaster, but Kim was staying with it and later was quoted :
"Because I had to !"
4,645 / 317 mph in 2003, still no european has done a better time

You do this on purpose don't you Benni

That may not be strictly true. Kim ran that in 2003 at the FIA Finals. This was before the current TSI system was installed at SPR which displays ETs to four decimal places. Andy Carter ran 4.6450 at the '07 finals so there's a good chance that's the quickest ever in Europe. I think myself and Mr Horn are going to have to do some digging and see if we can find out what the 4th decimal was on Kim's run as the old system went to 6 decimal places if you poked around in the back end. Especially as now I've put that in the public domain there's a good chance my phone will ring within the next few minutes.....
Also, Urs ran 318.95 at the '06 Finals, which is currently the fastest in Europe, although he was a whole 10th slower than Kim.
Hello crikey !
I certainly did not want to raise your blood pressure, the race weekends are in charge of that...
Yes, I know that the figures were the same on both runs, at least to the 3rd digit after the comma,
I also did not want to steal any jewels from King Andy´s crown.
Let´s just leave it that way, after this season these numbers might be history anyway (hoping).
Maybe Pelle from drdb.eu knows more about that, because in his new database Andy is #1 and Kim #2.
breathe, Andy, breathe
btt :
In one of Ed O´Connel´s recent galleries, there was a TF tyre that was a perfect octagon !
This "distortion" fact is really fascinating to me.
On one side the tyres need to be soft-sidewalled and wobbly to distort themselves,
in order to "throw" a big patch of rubber "in front of" the contact area between tyre and track,
so that the horsepower can be better dispatched over a bigger "footprint".
On the other side, this instability, together with clutch, suspension (if existant) and engine settings,
is the cause (or the amplifier?) of the much-dreaded tyre shake
when "unbalanced-ness" causes loss of traction, big headaches and sometimes mechanical massacres.
In an optimal run, the tyres HAVE to be unbalanced and distorted to get the power down,
but there are soooo many factors in this equation that even top tuners often don´t solve it.
Chaos theory scientists sure would have a field day watching this in slow-motion.
(I hope that I got this halfway right and await correction)

Just pulling your leg Benni, you know I love this stuff
Steve's going to have a look on the old system and see what Kim's 4th digit was. Whatever it turns out to be it's all unofficial as drag racing still only goes to 3 decimal places as per FIA regs.
As you say though, let's hope it's eclipsed this year, at least once !
