My son's new to him 2006 Civic has buttons for answering a phone - but seemingly no way of connecting via 3.5mm or Bluetooth.

I think I need ether a 3.5mm jack or (prefer) a Bluetooth adapter which plugs into back of the head unit.

Thoughts and suggestions of what works?

It's a 39100-SMT-E612-M1

The car will already have Bluetooth.
Do you have the owners handbook for the car because it tells you in their how to pair your phone to the car. In my book it's p338, but may be a different page in yours.

I can answer this one correctly as I worked for Honda for many years and have had plenty of these over the years too. Pre facelift before 2009/59 Civics did not have any aux input from the factory. The bluetooth on the one shown in the photo is for phone calls only, is voice controlled anyway (and is pretty rubbish to be honest). There was a dealer fit option for an ipod connection, but that's it. Even that wasn't great, and could only be used with very early gen ipods and not iPhones.

Therefore, you currently have no option to play audio from the factory bluetooth unless you use a cheap FM Bluetooth Transmitter 12v socket thing.
