I've heard good/bad things about track day experiances I was hoping some of you guys could let me know if they are a complete waste of money or good fun?

Something like this is in mind.

Some sources have told me you get very little time in the cars. I've also heard if you attempt to go faster than walking pace the instructor sitting next to you tells you to slow down. On the flip side I've also heard you can get some decent speed and its great fun. I literally have no idea if these days are good fun or a compelte waste of time/money.

My guess would be your experiance will differ massively depending on what company/track/instructor you use? Can anybody recommend any good "experiances" for a reasonible price?

Its probably worth mentioning that I'm located in West Yorkshire and wouldn't mind driving a V8 Vantage wink

If you have the budget I would recommend a Palmer Sports evening Session ... absolutely awesome ...you drive Karts(not fussed) BMW M3 GT3 , JPLM and a Formula Jaguar (single seater)
I was told off for not red lining their V6 300hp JPLM in every gear !! ... the instructors push you and the car to the maximum of "your" capabilities ...and then beyond in some cases smile
The trouble with the super car Track experiences are the cars there are usually owned by the instructors (I realise this is not always the case) so they tend to hold you and the car back .
Good luck with your choice smile
J.

That looks brilliant! I've been looking around there website and struggling to find the prices. Now I know why, its £480 for the half day session. My upper limit is around £300 :/. I didn't realise some of the instructors owned the cars! That would explain some of the views I've heard.

A friend has recommended Elvington where he had a Ferrari experiance. He reckons it was great and you could go "really fast". The problem is he's not particularly into cars so what he may call "really fast" I might see as pretty slow :/

It is actually pretty rare that the supercars are owned by the instructors, in most cases they are owned by the company running the event. The big players in supercar stuff are The Racing School, Everyman/DriversDreamDays (same mob two names), Sixth Gear and Driveme then for other racetrack stuff MSV run M3 experiences at Brands and Oulton and other circuits do similar things.

The link above shows a fair description of the worst experiences but it's also fair to say that a lot of people do come away having had a really good time, you do have to be realistic though about the amount of time that you would spend in car. There will always be a random factor as some instructors are inevitably better, more helpful and more enthusiastic than others and the guy in the passenger seat is probably the biggest influence on the day for most drivers.

I'd say it's worth considering traveling to an event on a proper circuit rather than an airfield venue, you will tend to have more experienced instructors as they will generally have to be ARDS licenced and will have been chosen as being able to deal with the more challenging conditions on a proper race track (barriers etc!). You would also most likely be out on a much more interesting track and at some point in the future you would be able to watch the BTCC or similar on TV knowing that you have driven those corners cool.

Also, I would suggest that you aim to book with the actual organiser of the event, not a broker like Trackdays.co.uk, you are likely to get a much more precise description of the event and are not having to pay a middleman along the way.

BTW, same thing goes to all the guys who are booking proper trackdays, support your chosen TDO by booking direct; the more successful they are the more events we have to choose from!
