CHEAP track car suggestions

Hi everybody!
I'm doing a track day in February at Cadwell park and need a car for it.
I have a few criteria which it must meet, they are as follows;
Cheap - as in £1000 max budget
Road legal - Must have tax and MOT
and that's it.
I've just sold an MX5 and don't want another as I'll miss that one!
Not bothered about driven wheels, I'm fine with anything.
I have a few ideas but I'll keep them under my hat for now.
Fire away! what would you buy for that money?

Don't be too fussy about make or model, at this price range.
Look for something already prepped, obviously! and something where a bit of thought and care has gone into it.
Anything stripped out with better suspension and MOST importantly brakes will provide loads of fun.
I started with a 306GTi6 for £1500 many moons ago. Great fun.
I'd look for any french hot hatch as they're light, cheap and fun. BMWs are great but they're quite heavy and will eat brakes and tyres that bit quicker.
Oh and get some tuition. You won't believe how much quicker you are after the first time you have some.

I've tried 106s and Saxos before and can't get on with them, my feet seem to be too clumsy for the pedals.
Clio 172 was pretty near the top of my list, as was an E36, so it's good to know I'm not too far off the mark!
Hadn't thought about 306 though, I think a Rallye would be too much, but a GTI-6 might not.
As for the Metro, as much as I'd love too, the missus is coming too and she won't even entertain the idea of a Metro, no matter how fun it'd be.

My 306 was a dark blue GTi6. It just looked like a mint road car. It had adjustable shocks, DS2500 pads and race fluid, 2 Sparco buckets, stripped out, no rear wiper etc, but still had door cards, heater and headlining.
It was superb. Quick enough although you will get passed on the straights but, so what, you'll get great pleasure from reeling them back in through the bends. It handled really well and would steer from the rear just enough on the limit.
The best £1500 I ever spent, honestly.
I sold it to move upto my Global but with that came the world of trailers, slicks and wets, dreading wet days, due to no roof and most importantly, no more instruction at new tracks (single seater).
I've just sold it and I'm looking to replace it with a road going trackcar. It's all you need.
