This is about the Nurburgring, but the sentiment stands.
I was at the 'Ring last weekend - and while there were virtually no Brits there, it was packed. And there was some properly lunatic driving - the guy who overtook in his M3, hand on the horn, on the right hand side, fully on the grass at over 120mph sticks in memory.
But I also had my scariest track experience ever. I came over a corner at full speed, to find a chap running into the track, waving his arms. Immediately started braking, came over a blind crest to see several cars on track, three badly smashed up, debris everywhere. Several others stopped further up, helping out. It had clearly just happened.
The longest seconds of my life followed as, under heavy braking from a very high speed, having just come over a crest I steered between people and bits of car. Returned to the car park fairly shaken.
The track ended up closed for the rest of the day, unsurprisingly
One of the cars was one whose owner had, frankly, had been driving like an absolute psychopath all morning.
To the guy who ran out onto track into 100mph+ traffic to wave at us. You, sir, have some big balls, and probably saved a few more of us from ploughing into that hell and making it even worse. Thank you.
The abiding thought I'll have will be of one of the drivers standing by the barrier, his girlfriend unconscious in his arms.
Chaps (and ladies) - be careful out there, on whatever road you're on. Safe driving.

Unfortunately the Nurburgring is now a main attraction for 'joe public', not just car enthusiasts. This isn't the problem. The problem is people trying to set lap times and as such, running out of talent. I'm sure it's a fantastic track (Never been myself!) to drive, but it's not exactly the easiest to master either!

There was actually a fatality three weeks ago.
However I couldn't find a report of anyone killed since then, so hopefully you didn't witness the aftermath of a fatality, Harry.

I can't open that link from work, but found the news story elsewhere ... It says he was thrown from the car!? A very sad story nonetheless, but was he wearing a seat belt? An Engineer visiting our site Knew the Passenger who got out unscathed. The Lad in the back had used the centre seat and belt and I believe it was something to do with a malfunction on that belt. Whether it was down to using the wrong belt clip or the ceiling mount was damaged in the rollover and allowed him out the back of the car I don't know.
