Best 'road legal' track tyre.

I have a road legal track car and need some new tyres. Car is rarely used on the road or in the wet. Any recommendations please.

I like Toyo R888's, However they are no longer the bargain they used to be at all.

But they still offer good dry grip, decent wear levels for a track tyre and also are not lethal on wet roads in my experience as long as there is not a huge amount of standing water

As R888 are silly now I have started using Federal RSR's on my Atoms

Find them pretty good

Federal fz201 look just as good as r888 but much cheaper.. anyone got any experience of these?

A new company has just started producing them, they're basically rallycross tyres with an e-mark. They're something like £75 a piece for a 215/45/17. But I can't remember who makes them

No there's some others. I'll have a look tonight when I get home they were in a mag not long ago. It's really bugging me now.

If it is Colway, then they're not a 'new' company. But it's not beyond the bounds of credibility that whoever bought C-Tyres (the owners of Colway) when they went bust has opened them up again.

From others off the CSL forum they seem to grip longer than the 888's which I also considered but with the cups at this price why not.

My track tyre I have at the moment is the Dunlop 02G medium/hard compound so looking forward to comparing the two.

Found it, it's the Maxsport RB5. It's basically a road legal tarmac rally tyre. Supposed to be a good budget option semi slick.

IIRC its available in soft, med, and hard compounds, so worth chatting to the dealer to get the best for your car

That's the one. From what I can gather dealers basically have a list of recommendations from Maxsport themselves as to what compound is best for the type of car.

Yes, these are good. I have them on a car too. Super grip when warmed up but I had problems on a cold, damp Cadwell in a light car, but that was the medium compound. Maybe I should get soft next time.

The Maxsport's are "Remanufactured" according to their website i.e. remoulds....

I'm quite happy with my Yoko A048's , you can pick them up used for about £20-30 on ebay

It means nothing - being a remould doesn't mean the tyre quality is any less than a new manufacture - in the days before 888s etc Dunlop made the SSR which was an outstanding tyre and was a remould
