Where can I have my car checked for noise other than turning up at a track and being shown the door?

You can buy noise testers from places like Maplins although they may not be totally accurate, or, read the same as the circuits testers. You are more than welcome to turn up at one of our days to get the car tested even if you dont book on.

Happy to test it for you but I am in York.

For a less accurate test there are iPhone apps that "do it".

Thanks both. I have an exhaust fitted to my car that is known to have issues with some circuits and get louder as more baffle material gets blown out so I'd like to know where I stand before wasting time/money for this year.

How strict are the figures for tracks (I appreciate that every one is different), is the limit the limit, or will they allow you say 1dB over on the day?

Little or no leeway in a lot of cases but if they have driveby as well as static testing they may let you out to see how it sounds under load.

Most circuits will be happy to do a static test for you whenever they are running a day so would be worth checking with whoever is closest to you.

According to the tour guide i had at the silverstone SS, they have gatso style noise meters around the circuit which monitor levels and any offenders are photographed. In addition to this the photo is sent to Northants and Bucks police, and they get fined £50k for the noise breach, hence the reason they are strict.

My T350 ticks over at about 98db, and around 104db at 3000 revs, so most track days are off limits to me

To the police? Right. I think he might have been pulling your leg there.

You must have put the full Carlos Fandango exhaust on your car - we've had many, many T350s on trackdays without an issue.

Don't bother unless it's the very circuit itself. The noise test results are even less precise among the circuits than the economical forecasts by experts in the banking industry...

I don't know if he was pulling our leg or not, but he said it was something to do with the licences for the circuit use on certain days. If they exceed the noise limit for that day they get fined, was the point he was trying to get accross.

No Carlos did not design my exhaust, but it was the "sports option" that was added when it was purchased from new. The system has 3 1/2" tail pipes and sounds awesome, hence the reason that I haven't reverted back to the standard T350 exhuast. The other issue is the rolled lip to the tail pipes which prevent track silencers being fitted, so new exhaust or no tracking with noise limits.
