Choice of tyres: mix between road and track use

Hello,

Im looking for a new set of tyres that are good for road use but also for trackday use.
The tyres i was thinking of are the michelin pilot sport and the pirelli P-zero.
But maybe you have some other options that maybe are better or are equal for a better price.

I use toyo r1r's, which are very good on road and track. Almost as good as my old 888's on track.

If you're considering the michelins then stop there.

I've had michelins exaltos and sports and i find them excellent all round, in the dry they work very well on track and last a surprising amount of time before they go off, in the wet they offer great predictable grip and the added bonus is they go on for miles compared to some tyres out there.

I'm using Pilot SuperSports on my Z4MC at the moment, and they are lasting VERY well.

Over 10,000 miles of road use (dry/wet/slush/cold), and about 50 'Ring laps (although the 'Ring is probably easier on tyres than a normal track) on them, and they've still got 5mm+ all round.

They're not cheap, but I think they're well worth it.

They don't like the first 5 minutes/miles from stone cold, but they warm up quickly and then perform like Cups in the dry and give plenty of confidence in the wet.

I find Michelin PS2's great on the track and on the road.

My track wheels have PS2's on them at the moment. Lots of grip in the try and very predictable in the wet too. They wear quickly, but the same can be said for most sporty tyres.

The "sports" range of most modern tyres should do, including reasonably priced quality Korean brands as already mentioned Toyo or Khumo.

Kuhmo V70a. Had these on my Z4MC for track use but ended up keeping them on the car for 3 months as the tyres on my CSL rims were close to the wear limit. They were amazing on the road in all but monsoon conditions.

toyos are a good budget performance tire although werent very good in the wet and bit squeely when pushing on at the limit

currently on Michelin Pilot Exalto 2s which are imo a brilliant all rounder

I had a brief look at these, what are they like in the wet/how long do they last?

edit: just checked again.. main reason i didnt get these were the poor wet/werent brilliant on wear

Soft squishy sidewall and will probably melt the tread of fairly quickly on track if the car is much over 1000kg.

Ok I'm interested in this too, just snapped up a Phase 1 Clio 172 and was wondering what the best track tyres are. Anything other than R888's for £114 each for 15'' - ouch - Or Yoko Advans for £78 each

i should of said that i run my R1R's on my 205 gti6 so on a light car they are brilliant. and i would never ever use yoko parada spec 2 again, far too soft walled for track use. i managed to wear the writing off the side wall where they folded so much.

I just replaced my MPS's with Continental Contacts. Both had top reviews but the Conti's scored higher in the wet when Evo tested them. Just thought I would have a try.

Well the JEC Jaguar series all run Toyo R1R R800 and T1-R's and they do OK. XJ's and XJS's aren't the lightest cars in the world
Toyo have improved their sidewalls quite a lot
