Went to the 'ring last weekend and did a bit of recording...
So this time I switched it to narrow view to get rid of all the interior it was showing, gives a better view of the road as well. Unfortunately I only managed 4 laps before we ran out of time and only trialled this one view.
Let me know what you think!

Its a difficult balance, I like to see what the steering wheel is doing, but not the rest of the driver. I've tried positioning my own a thousand different ways and have settled on this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgrQljupoxo
which is achieved by mounting the camera pretty much at eye level a few inches in front of the helmets, you can see it here:

I'm still not happy with it, but can't see how to improve...its obviously easier to do with no roof and lots of scaffolding to mount the camera on, but I think if you could figure a way to align the camera just in front of the drivers head then it will make a big difference...

go pro with 1080 30 fps medium angle on roll cage ,if youve got a roll cage gives a good angle

you're getting a huge amount of "rolling shutter" effect on that which is very distracting...I found that if you record in 720p60 it eliminates this with little perceptible change in qualityfootage on board silver ep3 ctr

This was filmed at 1080p, 127° FOV with cheap external mic located at the engine bay. Probably the best setting for my car.

Shot at Donington, summer evening at around 6.30pm.
Another option for FOV if rolling shutter is causing problems is to compromise on 960 48fps. The only downside with this is the 'postbox' effect created by narrowing the video image.
An illustration of the different resolutions/frames per second is in this video:
1) 1080 30fps - opening sequence to 2.03 with the silver car. Bad rolling shutter although I tried to stabilise it in in post production.
2) 960 48fps - 2.05 with the red car
3) 720 60fps - 3.25 with the yellow car.

That's not too bad, might want to try the Richmonds Mount, it's a chunky/meaty mount and easy to adjust with your fingers.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jgrQljupoxo

Do you have a link to the Richmonds mount? Its not coming up from a variety of googles. ThanksHow about a helmet mount? See this link - video by my passenger, but he was intending to be the driver of his own car, hence the mount on the left of his helmet, so the mount would be in the middle of the car if he was the driver.....
