Nurburgring Onboard Camera Hire

I had read on PH before that the Nurburgring were looking at making onboard cameras available for hire.

I went on the Nurburgring website today and found that if you booked a ticket bundle you received "10% discount on onboard cameras":

"4 laps: 95,- € incl. 1 ring°werk ticket 10 % discount on onboard cameras".

However I looked all over the site and couldn't find anything about actually being able to hire them. I also searched the PH forum before posting this but couldn't find anything either.

Has anyone been to the ring recently who could shed some light on the subject? Are onboard cameras available for hire there?

Yep they are if its open :-/ They have also put up the price on the hire aswell from what I heard. Best bet try find someone to borrow one from or buy one :-)

Last time I was there, it was €26/lap to hire the camera, and then they review it to make sure there's nothing on it that they don't want to be on it.

Either way you pay!

Wow that has gone up..last year it was 37 euros an hour I believe. And they only checked about the first minute of mine to check for anything dodgy and then handed it over.

We went around on Thursday evening, which was a tourist session. They weren't allowing cameras.

They weren't allowing YOUR camera, or weren't allowing THEIR camera?

The YOUR camera ban is still in place - but depends on which marshals are on the barriers or whether you don't fit it until you're through the barrier.

Yes it was OUR camera..

We didn't know we could hire cameras..

Just put the camera on once you're through the barrier. The camera hire isn't worth it in the slightest.

I haven't been for a few years so didn't know you could hire cameras.

Is the issue with your own cameras simply that it's a money spinner to rent them or is it so cameras are securely fixed in the car.
I assume theirs come with a secure fixing of some sort.

As with everything else recently at the 'ring, it's a money spinner. All they hire is an out-of-the-box Hero cam.

And they'll view the footage before giving you the memory card and edit stuff out if need be

A couple of months ago I went out on a TF day with my HD Hero on the windscreen in plain view. Each time I came in the marshals asked about the camera and I explained truthfully that it wasn't on, and that was accepted. It would have been possible to use it, but I wasn't willing to risk the threatened several thousand Euro fine. Also, I'm doing a track day at the Ring soon, so I'll be able to take as much video as I like then.

It seems ironic that you can't use your camera on a TF day to defend yourself against legal action from another driver/biker, but you can use it on a track day when there's no comeback.

Thanks for all the comments. I got back from the Ring on Sunday night and apparently as of fairly recently (I was there 8th & 9th September 2012) they will no longer be renting cameras.

However, it's not really a problem. I had read so much stuff about how hard it was to take some sneaky footage but everyone was doing it. As long as you're not too blatant you can easily take your own camera and film without too much fear of being penalised for it.

Please though, if you catch any horrendous accident's on camera, don't plaster them all over YouTube. At the moment they seem to be fairly (unofficially) relaxed about it all but I imagine they'd get much stricter once bad crashes start appearing everywhere.

Although if you capture it from the side of the track it's perfectly fine to post all over the internet

Ha ha, I don't make the rules! I was just echoing the general consensus of all the other track users I met there at the weekend.

Personally if I crashed (as long as I lived) I would want it put on YouTube, at least someone might get some entertainment from my misfortune!

Also, in most places the spectators are quite far from the track and there are lots of sections with no spectators at all. I can imagine that if a biker went into the barrier right in front of you in a car, it has the potential to be a lot more graphic than if it were filmed from some distance, and lets be honest, we all like a good crash video but no one really likes seeing another petrolhead (or anyone else for that matter) getting killed or seriously injured.

I think you know what I mean though. If they find that people are filming their lap times responsibly then maybe we would all be able to enjoy filming our laps a bit more freely in the future without the potential bans from the past.

just a quick thought if you have the iphone 4s download harry's laptimer pro for about £15 it has all the tracks around the world including all the nurburgring lap options ie grand prix bridge to gantry full lap etc.if you but a gps phone holder ie tom tom it improves the gps signal.It records in hd and does superb data logging and you can overlay the video with g force corner speeds and you can upload to you tube.For what it does it is a bargain.
