Hi All,

Just wondering if anyone is planning on attending the track day at Woodbridge Suffolk on the 21st?

Even if not any opinions on the track? I've driven proper tracks but not on an airfield, is there any difference?

Are there any particularly good videos of the track anywhere?!

Cheers
Ed.

It's very different from a track... The course is marked out with cones with the odd landing light or two in the middle of the track. The first half of the lap is quite free flowing, the second half is more technical.

Some of it is tarmac (runway) and some concrete, some of the surface changes are a bit harsh, it's also very abrasive on tyres. I've gone through an almost new set of fronts on a FWD in a single day.

That said, it is fun, there's plenty of room for mistakes although there are a few concrete hangars that you could hit, but you'd have to have done something pretty stupid to hit any of them.

The organisers don't like slicks on anything heavier than something 7-styled as they rip the tarmac up and the MOD have been getting upset about it.

Every time I've been the day has gone well with relatively few stoppages, although I have seen a few cars flipped when they go off and dig into the grass.

There's also no shelter at all, so if it's raining you're going to get wet.

Oh yeah and they like to change the layout, so if you watch any videos keep that in mind.

Ah, Nice one. Well looks like it'll be a baptism of fire!

Surface changes are always fun especially as it'll probably be wet!

Nice first track day in the Caterham then.

Cheers
Ed.

I've done Woodbridge twice this year. I think it's a good laugh.

It's completely different to a proper track. It's just an airfield with cones to mark out the course. The track normally consists of a bit of runway and goes round all the plane hangers. Therefore as you can imagine there is quite a lot of surface change, from tarmac to concrete. It can be quite bumpy too.

I've done it in the dry and the wet and have to say the wet (pissing down) was the most fun. It was a challenge to keep proper control of the car on the change of road surface and really good fun.

One thing to watch out for. Is to not follow too closely behind other cars. Although they do blow the surface clear before hand, there can be a lot of loose chippings which can flick up and chip the bonnet or windscreen.

Hi Ed,

as said already, surface is very abrasive so if you can take some old wheels and tyres to save wear on a good set..

also, if you're chasing someone watch for stonechips!

the track is bumpy so if you can keep your susp as soft as poss...

I'll be there in either an old Nissan skyline or e46 m3... Cant make my mind up! Skyline is very hard and very quick so may not be as much fun as m3.. M3 is bog standard so would have to go easy on brakes.... Have set of crap spare wheels and tyres for both.... Hmmmm...

Please feel free to come and say hello, always like to meet new folk and youd be most welcome to come for a spin to familiarize yourself..

Will try and find a vid - not a serious one but will give you an idea of the layout..

Cheers,
Sam

I think the video below is a better preview of what to expect on Sunday.

From memory we only ran the configuration linked in the previous video the once as we couldn't use the runway for some reason. Whilst we're on the subject of the other video I think I'd best point out that attempting to drift in front of other cars is going to earn you a private 'chat' with Colin wink

- Of course about the driving/drifting, when I've been before with javelin I've just had a quick chat with the guy who does the briefing about what's ok and never had any problems... makes a really nice change to most TDO's..
I take it you work for them? If so and you're going on sun hope to meet yousmile

Ed - you and me both will be hoping for rain! wink ive finally decided to leave the skyline and bring zie bm instead - swapped the wheels last night, looks funny with 17's...
You'll have a blast in your caterham rain or shine... Will be a great day!!!

Sam

Exactly Sam, that's the way you need to do it. There is a time and place for it and as long as people understand and follow that then we can work with them and everyone is happy. Unless you have a MK2 Escort in which case Bob will tell you off for not doing it all the time wink

I'm won't be there on Sunday unfortunately but I hope you all have a good day.

I'll be there in my White MX5 with my dad (I've tried to convince the bugger to have a drive but he was having none of it. So I have a feeling he may be trying to poach some passenger rides aha.

I'm definitely hoping for some rain (sorry to the kit car boys).

Hey no worries about wanting rain, I'm hoping for it to! My dad is the same, we bought the car together but he's more interested in the preparing rather than driving! Which I don't mind!

See you there.

Ps. Is there a petrol station nearby?
