Hi all
I'm going to be car shopping when I get back from NZ at the end of the month, I want a car for track days to do about one a month and also an odd trip through Europe and a weekend drive, I've always had 911's and Fancy a 997 GT3, I sold a 997 turbo last summer when I got into doing track days, it was a bit un involving once you got over the speed of the thing. Am I being a bit narrow minded is there something else that ticks the boxes? I could buy a dedicated track car and something else I suppose like an M3, I have RR as a daily and a trailer so transport is fine. One car I could drive to a track would be simpler. I have a £60k ish budget. Loads of options here but your thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Caterham R300 upwards....loads of spare change and faster round pretty much any track than porsche's ferrari's M3's etc.
True, but people don't do trackdays because they're after ultimate laptimes (I don't, anyway) and if you want something to drive to (far flung) trackdays or, as the OP does, for European touring, something like an R300 isn't ideal. I'd be tempted by something like an M3 CSL (+ upgrades) at your budget - very depreciation-resistant too. keep it lit said:

give me some of your best times around European tracks in your R300 & I'll compare with my times in an old 911.....?Straight lines is where the Caterham falls down so tracks like Goodwood are hard to keep up with the faster cars because there are long straights where they can use the power and not really any slow corners.
I had a GTR at Donnington last year which was surprising. I'd read nothing but good things about them but tbh it looked big and wobbly going through the chicane down to the hairpin.
If you do any british tracks let me know it would be great to see if we could do the same one and have some 'uncompetitive' competition

Not done Europe as yet, although i'd love to do spa! I couldn't give you a time as generally its not allowed but i can tell you i've done a lot of overtaking on 911's, M3's and Ferraris and never been overtaken. An F430 got me down the back straight at Goodwood but by St. Marys i was all over him again.

In that video as well the GTR looks heavy and leans quite a bit through the corners wheras the GT3 has that bit more bite to it, on the straights the GTR pulls away but it loses any advantage the moment it starts braking and turning. On a track like Anglesey with only short straights i think i could take you Mr Lit

right back at you sunshine.ETA i wasn't counting cool down or warm up laps in that claim btw. R300's etc are quick i don't see why its hard to believe tbh, given that most tracks i've driven have the odd caterham or porsche but mainly BMW's Cliosports and the like. Added to this the fact that an R300's at 345BHP/ton, you've got to be doing something wrong or driving in the pouring rain on semi-slicks to get overtaken by anything that isn't a high end porsche or something because unless there are long straights the R300 will always pull away for long enough to make the next corner and then pull away again through it.
As said a circuit like Goodwood's where it gets difficult because it's a fast circuit and it tends to attract wealthier drivers who've got fast cars like GT3's, 430, Gallardo's, Radicals and i even saw a Carrera GT once which sounded brilliant!

Show us a video of your driving then - anything will do.....

is due to a sensible thread asking about a car choice having rapidly degenerated into some kind of trackday laptime willy waving exercise. Any chance we can get back on topic?

my claim was backing up the post i made suggesting a caterham R300 upwards to the OP.
