I do a few track days a year, however I also go to B&Q a few times a month. I need a compromise that can do both.

I struggling to find a car with fold down rear seats which doesn't under steer like a pig on track. Budget up to £5K.

Car will be parked on the road, will only do ~6K miles a year. Needs to be bigger than a clio.

E36 M3 seems to be the best option or a Bmw 325 compact but they are both as rare as hens teeth these days.

Anything else. Are there FWD alternative which won't frustrate.

(The missus hates evos et al by the way)

Absolutely. The hardest and most focused standard car for anything like this sort of money.

I hate to be another fanboy, but in the last 12 months I did 7 track days in mine and the car only required general maintenance and a few extra oil services.

It’s my only car; my annual mileage is about 8k but I don’t need to use it for daily commuting. It has full interior and the only mods are JDM ’98 spec manifold, decat, baffle sump and s/s brake lines.

Exciting engine, great chassis with LSD, excellent Recaros, fun to drive on A/B roads and reliable. You should be able to get a good one for 3.5-4k, then upgrade the brake pads and fluid and you’re good to go.

E36 M3's aren't great in terms of suspension or brakes as standard

With a £5k budget I'd go integra, Renault sport megane or if there on budget maybe a mk 5 golf gti

get a proper, non-compromised road (B&Q) car and rent sommat for track days? If you're only doing a few days a year, I find it hard to believe you could run your own car for less than renting - especially by the time you've split the cost of the rental with a friend.

Thanks for the suggestions so far. I will add those to my car searches. The old megane's look like an interesting balance between the two although no LSD, which I've currently got in my current track steed.

Maybe we should put this into a different thread but I really can't make the costs of renting add up when I took a look.

I currently track a v6 coupe (which was meant to be a temp car but that's a different story), I've done 4 track days on my current set of yellow stuff pads, I've got 5mm remaining on my front tyres after three track days and I will usually go through a tank of petrol a session.

That gives me a rough cost of £100 a day plus venue costs. Yes there are other costs as I bleed the brake fluid more than average and I use expensive stuff, but it's still seems far far cheaper than renting, with the costs I've seen in the region of £600 a day to rent with more to pay if you break it.

I think the hondas are the best suggestions.

But as an option what about a Mazda 3 MPS. Plenty of power and just in budget I think.

99% of normal stuff is hopeless on track as standard.

Figure in decent suspension, geo & brakes as a min. Then there is tonnes of stuff can foot the bill, I used an M3 like that for ages a Corrado & Golfs also before that, used for work commute & runs to the tip & then scoot to 'ring, no probs. Pals have used Scoobys & Mitsi evos etc for the same.

I prefer a proper caged & prepped track focused track slag approach, but as long as you accept it won't be optimal on track unless you compramise the road use, then you can have lots of track fun in a daily $hitbox.

Perfect for B&Q and surprisingly good on track biggrin

I did change the suspension and fit harder pads though and it gets through fuel at an alarming rate smile
