I am fortunate enough to be going on the April trip to the ring courtesy of a client at work.

It's got me thinking about where to stay and what route I should take to get down there....

Any tips/hints greatly received.

Woza.

Your basic options are E40 & E31, quick but boring or E40, E42 off at Prum and cross country from there slightly less boring same time, or E40, E42, E19 Lille, E42 Mons, Verviers > Spa off at Prum and cross country from there. Least boring route but likely to be slowest on easter holiday Monday. Allow between 4h 30m and 5h 30m from the tunnel for these.

Depending on how much time you've got, I'd recommend going via Cologne and staying there for a night or two if you haven't been before.

I went in October and we set off from London at about 8am arriving in Cologne in time for dinner. It's a great city to kick back after the long drive. Then it's just over an hour's driving down to Nüburg on some pretty spectacular roads.

At the ring we stayed at the Dorint Am Nuerburgring hotel (the one on the start/finish straight of the GP circuit.) It's a fairly standard 3/4* hotel, some bits of it are a bit tired but it has a fantastic drivers' bar with tons of motorsport memorabilia. However it is expensive compared to some of the nearby B&Bs.

Also, partly due to it being late in the season when we were there and partly due to the enormous cock-up with the management of the Nürburgring, the area surrounding the hotel is pretty weird. It's like there was some sort of evacuation. There are loads of brand new shops, showrooms and restaurants that are closed or have shut down due to the complete failure of the whole complex. It's a bit of a ghost town.

Nürburg itself is about a mile from the GP circuit complex and is a tiny village with a couple of bars/restaurants/cafés and a little castle atop a hill which had some pretty breathtaking views when we were there (the weather was incredible for October.)

I'm going back in May and we're going via Cologne again. We're going to stay at a B&B in Nürburg. The entrance to the actual ring is about two miles away from the GP circuit complex/theme park so there's no real reason to stay there.

Such a sad thing to hear, but that is about the best description I have ever heard of the 'Ring Village' laugh

When I drive from Suffolk, I tend to get a midday Chunnel, stop off at Brugges for fuel/coffee, head for Brussels (trying to avoid the 5pm exodus) then either head for Cologne or Spa for a stopover. Cologne to Nurburg is quite a nice drive but Spa to Nurburg is epic.

I've also done the Lille/Charleroi route but the roads were in a real state. Trying to avoid potholed motorways at 80MPH+ isn't much fun!

Stay here http://www.am-tiergarten.de/en/rooms-nuerburgring

Sabines family's place with the famous PistenKlause restaurant and bar... its one the the must go places for any ring virgin, as is having a steak on a stone. Most people will be in here the night after the trackday... as will Jochen from frozenspeed so you can buy some nice photos of your car on track

I'm staying there. I always stay here, the motorsport hotel or and I know people will swear at me for staying there... the Lindner congress. (it has good movie selection wink )

Yep, I always stay at Am Tiergarten and eat at the Pistenklause in the evenings. The hotel also do a buffet lunch for around €10 which is very good quality.

I'm there on Sunday meeting up with friends, shame the track is closed. frown

I seem to recall that Jochen's pictures are free as part of the deal on DN7 yes

ETA: They are.

<But there's more - we have agreed with Frozenspeed that any photographs of your car be included in the price and provided to the participant free of charge.>
