Have I found the perfect budget trackday car?
Discussion
Chrysler Crossfire SRT-6
It's got an AMG 3.2L supercharged engine, and low mileage not-too-old cars go really cheaply
at least the non-supercharged 3.2 crossfires go for just over £3k, which is crazy!

as a pure track car, where you don't have road tax/fuel cost etc to consider, it's gotta be a complete bargain buy?
I've half a mind to just buy that one above, strip it out, and see what other cars on track of similar cost it can beat

well it's basically an SLK32 AMG same engine/chassis, 80% same) with some different styling.
in terms of track comparisons using nurburgring stock lap times, the slk32 amg equates to a 350z, or a bmw e92 335i or faster than a bmw z3 m roadster.
From the car magazin "Sport Auto" No.5/2001
Nurburgring:
Mercedes SLK32 AMG: 8.26 min
Reference car:
BMW Z3 M Roadster: 8.31 min

I think you're wrong. I'm aware that the platform, engine and drivetrain are shared with the SLK 320 but I think you'll find the suspension used is very different from what you'll find on the AMG Mercedes- and the old SLK was never a 'sports car' anyway- rather a mildly warm roadster built for top-down cruising. in terms of track comparisons using nurburgring stock lap times, the slk32 amg equates to a 350z, or a bmw e92 335i or faster than a bmw z3 m roadster.

In the motoring press the Crossfire was criticised for wallowy handling, numb steering, a general feeling of heaviness and that automatic gearbox.
I think that, far from the 'perfect budget trackday car', you've found an overweight, sloppy, mid-90s platform with a gearbox to match, which unless heavily modified will be vastly inferior to a great number of cars for a simular budget.

In answer to your question......no you haven't .
you're gonna tell me a 3 series or an mx5 of the same value beats it?
It won't be budget level for sure with SRT6, petrol will disappear, tyres will get chewed and brakes mullahed. It won't be the fastest as an E46M3 will beat it with same bhp.
And you are right, mx5 is perfect budget day track toy, add a turbo and you are away.
Forgot totally about all AMGs being auto. kind of ruins it for me, agreed, although I think regarding the sloppy suspension and braking being mentioned, I'd guess that's talking about the non-srt version,
"The SRT-6 package includes stiffer spring rates (50% in the front, 42% in the rear, with higher jounce and rebound rates) and larger brake rotors, with vented rear disc"
but again, it's all about money.
show me a decent mx5 turbo that you can buy for £3500, likewise, no point in comparing e46 m3s, they're not in the same price range.
Like I say, the auto kills the idea for me now anyway, and there's no truly viable option to convert to manual

It's not an AMG thing. The Crossfire is not an AMG mercedes with Chrysler bodywork, and even if it was, it'd be far from 'the perfect budget trackday car'. That's not to say that I doubt Chrysler's ability to come up with a suspension set-up for an everyday car which performs 'perfectly' on track...
