Dug out my crash helmet today, not been used for a while. I noticed some bubbling on the surface finish - it's about 7 years old I think? Has anyone ever seen this before, know the cause and know whether or not it means I need a new helmet?

I saw it once on a Bell helmet that was only about 6 months old and the supplier replaced it without question.

I can't help you as to whether its safe or not, but someone more knowledgeble will probably be able to tell you.

Looks like blistering of the paint caused by moisture working its way through through from the unsealed internal surface of the shell material. Fairly common sight on cars that have fibreglass or carbon bodywork after a winter. Unsightly but only cosmetic.

Good excuse to get the helmet painted in to your own design?

As Unc said. The paint job has gone bad. Happened to a panel I had sprayed and they had to do it again. Won't affect the safety of your lid. New paint job needed!
