Standard suggestions - MK2 or Mk3 MR2, MX5 (although technically lacking grunt but a track day fav), Clio 172.
You could get a BMW325ti for that budget if you look around. I'd say that the problem with a larger BMW for track use if you are on a budget would be that you'd eat through combustible parts quicker, so would have to spend more on it. But then not speaking from any sort of experience.
Leftfield option would be a manual FTO - go for a mivec. They're very cheap, have a great engine and quickish enough for a track day (0-60 is around 7 seconds I think, less on the more recent mivecs). Think cheap, less good DC2 ITR. Could also look at an Accord Type R under the same criteria.
