I'm looking for some new track day tyres and was hoping a fellow p'her may be able to save me some cashsmile

The last time I got a set was due to a kind person here mentioning mytyres were having a fantastic deal on federal rs-RS so I ended up paying £330 for 4 235/45/17's smile

I've been warned not to go for anything too sticky in case of oil surge so this puts r888's out.

I've seen BF Goodrich g-force rival is meant to be good, also the Yokohama ad08-r but can't find the former in the uk..

Can anyone help??

Don't want to spend nearly twice as much as last time frown

Thanks in advance all smile

Try Protyre Motorsport, they normally work out cheapest when I look around.

How did you find the Federal RS-Rs? I considered them last time I needed a couple of tyres.

- about the federal RS-R's - I've used two sets. First set lasted ages but although there was tread left I started getting high speed vibration, eventually worked out it was the tyres. Also the grip really decreases with use and they become more squealy.

1st set lasted very well though - at least 20 track days, and excellent grip when fresh.

Second set are making the car vibrate now (car felt so much nicer when they were new)... only slightly but it's not nice at 130+mph frown

Hoping something like the yokohama AD08 might not give as much initial grip but after a few months might give more than a similar aged federal... also hope it wont go out of shape like the federal...

A lot of hope lol!

Extra £160 for the yokohama's.. ouchfrown

8 track days on my AD08s and they're still going strong. Quite a few also use them in the Porsche circles over in the US with no issues at all, while on the other hand there's loads of quality complaints everywhere from 595 RSR users! So I reckon the Yokos will be fine right down the the wear markers. Will probably last longer too as they have a higher treadwear rating. smile

I don't think you'd ever get near £330 for anything else - a set of tiny 15" Yokos to fit the MX are pretty much the same price! The set for the GT3 was almost triple that paperbag

Yup, a big fan of the R888s - although Im not a fan on them on the road due to stiff side side walls and massive tyre noise.

They clung on for a good 25 lap stint last time I was out; although they go through a weird phase after lap 5, feels like they are over heating - could be the fronts to rears coming up to heat.

Just a shame they are so expensive!

Catch up with you guys next track day thats on a weekend.

Somebody asked about RSR 595.
I have used these on two cars and they are not a grippy track tyre like 888, A048 or the amazing Kumho V70 aka V700.

I think, although it is not helpful but gives a hint, the treadwear rating (I think) is 180 on the federal and some of the trackday compounds are 50.
So for track days I am either trying to go as quick as I can which includes getting a nice tyre like the three above or forget all that and use something reasonable in the road sense like T1R* and use them in the morning of a track day to learn how to drive the track, then surprise myself with the grip of sticky tyres in the afternoon. There was another tyre which I found pretty good as a road thing, I think it was a Yokohama S Drive.

What I am trying to say is that if you don't go all out for a great tyre, then don't waste the money on a good average tyre. I find these and Parada Spec 2 the most frustrating reading on forums when people say how good they are.

  • Again, don't get confused between the A class and things like T1R, T1R sidewalls are weak and fold over but grip quite well considering. The tread gets worn at an angle, its quite interesting.

Great advice this - thanks for taking the time to post thissmile

Worth remembering the extra stress on the car running the proper cut slicks like R888 A048 etc. The garage I use don't recommend using them unless the sump has been baffled. Same goes for brakes/susp but just with less severe wallet bashing potential!!

dude are you having a laugh your tyres lasted 20 trackdays? no offence but do you corner or brake hard at all?

i was getting through RSRs on the front of my track saxo in 4-6 days, illegal tread after that. 888s died after 4 days, had some tread left but after that many heat cycles the rubber was finished.

i wouldn't buy them for my exige, as a guy above says they're mid range tyres, don't offer much grip at the limit and take a bit of effort to heat up, your better with proper semi slicks ala toyo 888s or a cheapish road tyre if you want a more playful car
