Evening all...

I've been looking to buy a helmet for track since my Arai one I had a few years ago doesn't fit my head anymore. Why that is, I'm not so sure... but it's bloody tight. Must have been all the random car facts I've attained over the years...

Anyway I've been on eBay looking for a plain white helmet to match my car and these Nitro ones have come up. I remember the brand, which is a start, but I can't remember them being so cheap.

£30 delivered, what's the catch?

I'm a believer in not skimping on safety, but surely all lids must meet some requirements before being allowed on the market?

What's everyones opinions?

Dan

Endless debate on this about £30 helmet for £30 head or whatever.

I bought a Nitro as my first motorbike helmet and it was fine, apart from the fact that I bought a size too big. For me the big difference is an overall reduced quality versus the Arai I have now. The Arai looks better, feels more sturdy, and has less fussy seal arrangement around the mouth area. I'd buy Arai again for this reason rather than safety concerns.

There's another brand called LS2 that is cheap as well. £30 delivered I think - no catch. I have one in L size and it is the same as an Arai L. That said, for track days I use an open face Sparco because it keeps me cooler in the car.

i use a sparco open face as above, for the same reasons

also, as i race (sprint) we have to use a car-helmet, not a motorbike helmet. there are differences (unsure myself but thats legislation for you).

have a read of this to muddy the waters somewhat smile

If you had an L Arai do you also have an L Sparco?

Well this is awkward, see above post lol. Just found the Sparcos now, seem a steal!!

Just read through endless open face vs closed face discussions.

I think I'll go for the Sparco. Should the worst happen I'll trust my safety harness to stop me eating steering wheels smile

I think it will be better to have the vision on track to stop me crashing in the first place...!

Just saw this. Assumed the Sparco was L but it's actually an M/58. Is quite a snug/tight fit but is only ever on for 15 minutes at a time. It was a hand-me-down.

I like your Flickr album BTW. There's a couple of shots around the Nurburgring I'd like to use on Nurburgring.org.uk. I'll get in touch.

I have a question.... does FIA approval cost the manufacturer?

I'm trying to wonder why some helmets and bucket seats are cheaper, as they dont have FIA approval. ?

I have a white LS2 full-face helmet for track-days - I went to the NEC Classic last year needing a lid, and wandered over to the motorbike section. There was a stand selling a huge array of helmets, in terms of weight/fit/quality etc I was happy with the LS2 and still am. Cost about £35 IIRC.
