RMA track days
Discussion
Hi guys,
Just curious to get some opinions of those of you that have took part in an RMA track day, specifically with regard to the overtaking on left AND right rule. How is this policed? With a "normal" track day where overtaking is only on the left and (normally) with the car in front consenting by indicating to the right, its reasonably clear cut whats going on. If you can overtake on the left and right and don't have to get "consent" from the car in front, what steps are in place to make sure people aren't getting stuffed up the inside/outside all over the place? Obviously if you are a racer or mega experienced then I guess its not too much of an "issue".
This isn't meant to be a "dig" at RMA in any way shape or form, just genuinely interested in peoples experience as I'm seriously considering doing a day with them and I note they are now "linked" to Pistonheads. It may be that they cater for drivers of a certain level of experience and cars of a certain level of performance, but I'm not sure.
Over to you.....
Cheers

I done an RMA day at Spa a few years back. The overtaking rules worked without issue all day.
One thing I did notice though - there were far more race cars / supercars there so if you have a Clio (like me) or an MX5, you spend most of your day looking in your mirrors. This is just a reflection of the fact that RMA tends to be at premium tracks and as such, attract premium cars/drivers.
I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Also did my first day with RMA at Oulton a few weeks back. Fair to say I was apprehensive at the outset too, but the briefing is like no other (you will see!) and there was a real no nonsense approach to the day.
Actually felt the overtaking both sides was a good thing and within the first few laps felt quite at home with it. It did however on a couple of occasions make me tackle overtakes which I wouldn't otherwise have on a normal day, but quickly found my feet.
As far as idiots go - fair to say RMA won't tolerate it at all. First two complaints about any driver and you are going home without question - and I witnessed a few (who were idiots!!).

I did my first day with them earlier in the year, and plan to do another. It was very intense. It's on a different level to all other track days that I've done. Much more like a testing day with some very, very fast cars.
Overtaking in corners is something that takes a bit of getting used to, particularly since I was in a much slower car. There was talk about separating slicks and road tyres into to different sessions but not certain what became of it.
You do need to have your wits about you. But if you don't, what are doing trackdaying anyway?
You'll love it. But you will be knackered.

I did brands GP with them last year. Being overtaken on Paddock Hill Bend on the left, as you're naturally moving towards the edge of the track was f
king terrifying!
However, it was a bloody good day though generally and the overtaking was mostly pretty decent once you knew to expect it - I wouldnt be afraid to wear the novice sticker on the back of the car at an RMA day though as there were lots of teams shaking down race cars.
I'm not the fastest driver out there, but try to be among the smoothest (and fail).

Let's us know how you get on. Always nice cars at RMA days as well so pics needed
Well, what can I say. It was worth going just to listen to the briefing, I've never experienced anything like that before
I won't give anything away as I don't want to spoil it for anyone else who hasn't done an RMA day before
The whole day was great (apart from the weather and a slipping supercharger belt), the overtaking rule works really well and I didn't see anyone doing anything "stupid" whilst out on track, also a wide range of cars with some very tasty full on race cars out and about.
Took some video and will upload it later for anyone interested.
Thanks again for your insights, definitely glad I went

Cheers

It was the worst briefing I`ve experienced. I`m all for being treated like an adult, but really ? Effing this, effing that. "If you don`t know what the effing flags are, you shouldn`t be on this day..".

After that sort of statement, nobody was going to dare ask a question if they were unsure. !

Some great footage. What camera(s)/logging setup is that? RaceRender for the video composition? loggyboy said:

Cheers. I use a GoPro for the "main" feed and Mobius HD cameras for the rear/pedal views. Borrowed a mates GoPro for the "cabin" feed, but seeing as it seemed to all work ok I'll probably get another Mobius to film that (they are only £60 and are full 1080p).Data Logger is an RacecapturePro unit. Yes, I use RaceRender to "convert" the data into graphical representation, but I don't use that to do any video editing etc, I use Cyberlink Power Director for that side of things.
Hope that helps
