Hi all,

Last year I attended an evening track day at Brands Hatch Indy circuit in a friend's car. Overall I enjoyed the experience but I spent most of the time getting out of the way of much fast cars (...or better drivers) and with 25 cars on track at the same time made it very difficult to get a clean lap. Plus some of the driving was overly aggressive for a track day.

I know the Indy circuit is small, but is there any track day organisers who allows less cars on track? In fairness it was only £99 but I would rather pay £150 and have less cars!

Hi,

Even at Brands on some seriously busy TD's I always find a decent slot on track if needed.

Usually do more running after lunch, when some of heavier cars, or over excited people go through their brakes and tyres.

Even when out on the track, if I see a train of cars I don't want to be part of, just back off safely and find some good space.

You can find more expensive, exclusive days, but I think if you go to any you can make it work for yourself.

Also don't be intimidated by anyone, inc racing drivers on track.

Drive your own lines, be vigilant, and lift off/indicate when needed to do so.

Edit: Same applies on Evening TDs. Don't rush out, and look at the garages/circuit when you want in.

Enjoy.

Thank you for the advice, I will take that all onboard.

I really want to revisit Brands again this year - I might try and get some instruction which might help.

MSV at Brands do have a few 'Novice' trackdays through the year and even 'Road Car' only days, so maybe this would suit you until your more confident. Instruction is worth the little extra cost. Also try a couple of Airfield trackdays, in most cases nothing to hit but small cones and again usually just Road cars use these events.

i tend to go for open pit lane events and let everyone get the initial mad rush out of the way later in the afternoon you can often find only a couple of cars on track

There are number of novice track days - look out for them.
Second choice would be road car only days (has to be road legal and driven to the track)

Already said above, but worth saying again. Try to choose a rack day to suit you and your car, you will enjoy it far more if you are realistic.

I am presently trying to persuade a 66 year old friend of mine not to book an open track day (ie race teams included, overtaking both sides) at Spa Francorchamps for his first time on track - in £70k worth of DB9. yikes He thinks he's a driving God because he can hold an X5 steady at 95 on the M11.
