I was wondering if there is a Strava type site for uploading GPS data from Track Days or some software for working out lap times?

I usually use HLT, but it buzzed out and wouldn't load the track data.

I use actual Strava, but have made the data private so as not to piss on the chips of anyone who's run/cycled around the circuit in question...

I use RaceChrono. You can download favourite tracks, or build your own circuit.
Download your track in advance of your day and you don't need your data service.
It gives lap times, max speed on each straight, min speed on corners. Map overlaid on Google Maps/satellite view.

I was thinking about some data logging but Harry's Lap timer looks like a possible cheaper alternative. I've been reading through the website which is quite detailed but I'm wondering if

a) is it is possible to place the iPhone in a discrete location so that the TDO's don't get annoyed by you appearing to time your laps? Presumably the phone needs to be fixed so it can't move around?
b) can you overlay the data onto video from a non-GoPro device that has been recorded separately on that device?

Struggling to understand how it all works!

Thanks
Steve

You can use RaceRender to combine separate video and data but it's a right faff figuring out which lap is which. I tried briefly but couldn't be arsed in the end.

HLT is the best low cost option but the last time I went on track it seemed to have issues with the GPS position of the car as it thought a few laps I did were incomplete or double the length as I didn't cross the line. I'm going to look into an external GPS device which should improve HLT.

How easy is it to import external video into Harry's lap timer?

I use HLT (Harry's Lap Timer) for recording the lap times from my XGPS160 10Hz Bluetooth GPS and the ECU data via WiFi. It sorts out the lap times saving hassle.

I record video with a GoPro, but you can use anything, even the iPhone. HLT has timestamps and so does the GoPro so lining up the data/video is quite easy.

I used 3M Dual Lock, like Velcro but a lot stronger, to mount my iPhone on the passenger seat cross member. This is out of sight of driver and passenger so should be fine with TDO's.

Overlaying all the data is done with DashWare which is now free software, I think GoPro has bought the company recently.

Unfortunately HLT buzzed out and didn't log the last sessions, so I couldn't find out my lap times. In the end I uploaded to Strava as private to find out my times as the BT GPS records to its internal memory.

Thanks for that info - really helpful.

If you use an external GPS does the iPhone need to be rigidly fastened i.e. could you have it charging through the lighter socket and rest it in cupholder compartment with the lid partly shut?

It looks like there's some problem with HLT at the moment with the current version and iOS so I think I need to leave downloading it until that is sorted.

Steve

ETA - maybe I've not thought about this very well as presumably the accelerometer and other inputs are coming from the phone so perhaps it does need to be rigid?!

That's correct, needs to be a rigid mount for Accelerometer. ;-)
