BMW Car Club Oulton Park Friday 6th Nov 15
Discussion
Did a BMW Car Club GB Track Day at Oulton Park on Friday 6th Nov 15.
Started off wet, dried a little after lunch and then rained again.
Quite slippery through Cascades, Hislops chicane and Knickerbrook.
200miles at 11mpg, and no red flags for the day which is all good by be.

No doubt it was fun, but you are a braver man than me stevesingo!
That's an awful lot of rare classic car to be peddling out on track.
What are they now 30K+ for an original E30 M3 Evo?

The way I see it is that these things are there for using and despite spending a substantial amount of money and time restoring the thing whilst values were rising, I was and still am committed to using it.That's an awful lot of rare classic car to be peddling out on track.

About 6-7000 miles and two track days a year.

A group of friends went in a mix of cars & said how good the day was, even if it was a touch slippy in places! I'll try & post some of their pics shortly.....I'm gutted I couldn't attend, even to spectate/be a passenger
What cars did they bring along, there was quite a mix, as there always is on the BMW Car Club days. Not just BMW nerds like me.
You might find them on these pics taken by the duty BMW Car Club Photo Ninja, Darren Teagles

Of course it is your car and you can do with it as you wish. No argument there and I understand where you are coming from.
It's just that it's a very rare car now and worth a whole bunch of cash. Of course that is relative, what I might consider an investment in terms of value can be pocket change for someone else.
I also have a track car, an E36 328 Sport, all in it owes me around 3K so far and a whole lot more in my time, but whilst I wouldn't be happy if it was wrecked by myself or someone else on track, I wouldn't loose too much sleep over it and know that parts are available to rebuild if necessary at a relatively moderate cost.
Our track car is regularly attempted
to be driven at ten tenth's, but if that was a GT3 RS, a 458 or an E30 M3, I would find it impossible to justify attempting the same regardless of whether it is mine or not, just because they are so special.
P.S. excellent pics. in motion on flickr. Props to the photographer.

I drive it on track as hard as I dare, in that any accident I have is likely to involve me also, so self preservation plays a part. In the wet at Oulton, I experienced understeer, oversteer, out braking myself a couple of times, so I think I was at my limit. I have no intention of crashing the thing as that would be ruinous for me, so I guess I temper my enthusiasm a little more than I might do in a £1000 car. But that is not the point of driving on the track for me. I go there to get enjoyment from getting the most from myself and the car. Sure I could put R888 tyres on and go quicker and strip the interior out to go quicker, but that would be the car going quicker, not me getting the most out of what the car and myself.
FWIW, the current values of the best examples are more than twice my annual salary and 66% of my house value. So, it is no frivolous pursuit I can afford to throw away on a whim. Earning six figures and living in a seven figure house and tracking a 911GT3 is probably less of a risk to those in such a fortunate position.
