Hi guys just wanted a few opinions on some ideas I have been having about updating my track car. I have had a few road legal trackday cars over the past few years but have found them to ba bit too much of a compromise. Highly tuned Subaru WRX STi to hard for the street and current Porsche 911 GT3 Mk1 too soft for the track sometimes. So have been considering getting a track only car and trailering it to and from events.
One car the I have been very interested in is the new Radical SR8 however the price is turning me off a bit. $172000 AUD a standard before you add all the goodies that I know I would want. So I have been investigating other options.
The most appealing alternative I have come up with is I can buy a 1999-2002 CART/IRL rolling chassis including gearbox (no engine) for about $70000 AUD. For an engine choice I have found the Ryan Falconer Race Engines does a 2002 spec IRL engine that they have converted to "street" use. Lower compression, new cams, lower redline and a supercharger to allow you to run it off standard premium unleaded petrol. 560hp@8000rpm and 421ftlbs@5500rpm. All for about $70000 AUD again. So that leaves we wil a car for about $140000 AUD that will almost definately perform better than the Radical and still give me some money left over for a good trailer, tyres etc.
Any opinions, suggestions or alternatives will be greatly appreciated.

Another one of the possible IRL cars

P.S. Sorry for the very long post.

Have you looked at these: www.elfin.com.au/flash/index.aspx ?
Pretty sure you could set one up in track trim.
Your idea of getting a single seater is a good one - there must be other single seaters available.
Of course I have to recommend www.caterham.com.au/ as that's my track day toy.

Scott,

For value for money trackday wise & with a budget you have, I suggest a Radical SR3 1500...a good 2nd hand one would cost about £30,000 here.
This would quite likely be dry-sumped and race spec, and one with a refreshed engine always a good idea.
Good luck.

Not sure about Oz, but thought that most track days here in the UK prohibit single seaters.

With that sort of money to spend you could have a damn good seasons real racing I would have thought.

One reason I liked the Indy car is it is something totally different. We have had Caterhams and the like over here for ages and now we have got Radical and Ariels starting to be seen at various trackdays. The Indy car has that bit of WOW factor when you roll it off the trailer. There are some track days in oz which do allow single seaters. You see formula ford/holden cars and some F3 cars every so often.
If I don't get the Indy car I will probably get the Radical SR8. I'm still weighing up options. It will probably be next year before I actually do anything.

so you're looking at £60k for an indycar with a reliable engine!!! talk about taking a step up!!! i appreciate the engine is 'detuned' but still what are the service intervals and costs for both the gearbox, engine and brakes? still would be spectacular for that kind of money without the ridiculous hastle of a full race engine... awesome.

The service intervals tha Falconer were talkign about on that engine being used as a trackday car was approx. 50000km for a strip down, inspection and refresh. The gearbox I am unsure of however I have also contemplated changing this to a different unit as I don't need the rpm and constant thrashing capabilities of the X-trac race box. Brakes are better than I expected as they use iron discs like road cars albeit larger and high quality, unlike carbon/ceramic disks like those used in Formula 1 cars.
There are planty of spare parts floating around in the states for these cars and even the chassis makers like Dallara and Reynard still have large spare lists available if need be.

I want to go out and get a test drive of both a Radical SR8 and Atom 2 300hp before I make the call on the indy car.
