PH: your Nurburgring times please
Discussion
There are two 'standard' timings for Ring laps:
- full lap - the entire Nordschleife (North Loop) - this is not possible during the 'Touristenfahrten' (tourist driving - i.e. public days) as the track entrance is on the main straight.
- BTG - Bridge to Gantry - this is measured, after leaving the tourist entrance, from the first bridge 'Antoniusbuche' (before 'Tiergarten') - to the gantry over the track after coming back onto the straight after 'Galgenkopf'.
There is one more measurement sometimes referred to - for a 'VLN' lap. These are laps which include nearly all of the Nordschleife and about half of the Grand Prix track. The VLN is the series of long distance races held on the Ring during the year.
So - for reference:
Full lap = BTG plus 25 seconds (approx)
VLN lap = full lap plus 90 seconds (approx)
The lap times quoted by magazines are typically full-lap - whereas most of us amateaurs refer to BTG's (as we rarely get a chance to do full laps).
Clarkson's 9:59 was a BTG.

So where the M3 say did a lap in 8:25 or so officially, chances are that it is a full lap, so any amateur going in an M3 is looking at 8:25 minus 25 seconds to get BTG time?
Never really understood why they don't all use BTG for road cars and publicity times etc, as it's not like anyone can compare their real car with the full lap when they can only get BTG times.
Also note that Evo magazine's recent Ring' guide starts at the full lap start point, so is pretty useless in it's current order for anyone going to the Ring who isn't properly racing the full Ring.
Also noticed they miss out the section from the bridge to the official full lap start point! Doh!

probably because trying to equal a magazine time will result in a very short lived trip into the nearest piece of armco to hand..

Guess so, but if your gonna try go faster still anyway, you'll end up off no matter what time your after!
Best to just go your own pace and build it up till your comfortable. Afterall, it's just a toll road

8.11 BTG
M3 CSl on cups last September. My 6th lap there.
Did you have a certain Brummy sat in the passenger seat telling you which way the corners went?
DAZ
No, I had a very grey looking teenager at the end though. Thought he was going to lose his brekkie.
Mr Bennett is a bit good round there. He would have been in the 7.40s I expect.
The DL1 trace shows lateral 1.51 G through the fox hole.... I enjoyed that! Good job the door latches were strong enough to keep my mass inside the car

all BTG times are +- a few seconds except the Smoadster:
8:45 stock '01 Opel Speedster
9:20 stock '05 BMW 116 (skinny winter tires)
9:40 stock '04 Smart Roadster 82hp
10:00+ stock VW Beetle TDi cabrio, 4 up :=)
A large portion of the Smoadster's time was accumulated up Kesselchen, from Hochheichen-SX, and Steilstrecke-Höhe Acht. Through the twisties (and downhill
its quite close to the Speester and a majority of the other cars on the Ring.
Feel no need to go quicker around than an 8:45 in the Speedster. This requires a fairly high level of commitment, and with stock underpinning the car moved around quite a bit at speed. Beautiful driving car...
cheers

8:12 BTG - 964RS
I'm regularly doing 8:20's - but to get properly below that I need to be lucky with the traffic and weather. It's amazing how little it takes to turn a hot lap into a cool one.
