Having done a Ride/Drive training day in the past that included some time on an airfield (near Cambridge I think) I was wondering if private hire of that kind of location is available at a reasonable price. A wide open space to try things out with no distractions is what I'm looking for. No instruction, just a place to get used to the limits of a car with no fear of hitting stuff!

Given that the Ride/Drive course included this in the price of the day I can't imagine that the cost was huge.

Does anyone have any suggestions of wide open spaces that can be hired at a reasonable cost to individuals?

I suspect the real problem & hence cost is public liability insurance, which you'd be very foolish not to have.

A few years ago, myself and a few local members of the WSCC hired Oakington airfield just outside of Cambridge. The owner took a bit of tracking down (sorry don't have the contact details anymore) and we set up a bit of a trach and had an enjoyable few hours drivingsmile

The insurance point is an interesting one that I hadn't considered.

So there aren't any suggestions of airfields near Reading I could look into?

If you are talking about Longcross, that's not an airfield and anyway you'd have to prove you had £5Million Public Liability insurance, as you would most places you want to use for driving activities these days.

There are no airfields within 25 miles of Reading you could hire anyway unless you want to try and talk your way into Blackbushe. I wouldn't hold your breath though...

Best just to go to a pre organised event, they are very safe and you can push your limits without worrying too much. I have taken a few of my clients to airfield days and Colerne was a good one (down near Castle Combe)!

A friend of myne who runs a motorsport acedemy rents a airfield down near Castle Combe (maybe Colerne) and I think it's pretty cheap, as he knows the guys...
