im curremtly looking at buying a mk2 golf as a track/fast road toy, i am based in louth lincs but does anybody know of someone local barring corten miller who i wouldnt trust with my worst enemys.......

im looking for around 200bhp at the wheels, stripped and the suspension fully set up for hard track use....

which engine do i choose? vr6 is nice but heavy and vag 1.8t engine is pricey

To get 200 bhp at the wheels you're looking at high budget 16v that will rev to 8k or so...

I've got a VR6 in mine with 268 deg cams and it's 'only' 175 at the wheels.

200 @ wheels is a lot for mk2, really need 1.8t or turbo/SC VR6 or big money mega spec 16v. Personally im a fan of 16v power utterly bullet proof & cheap & 180 or so bhp (fly not wheels) is cheap & easy to achive & still bullet proof, 200 (fly) a tad more expensive & tough to hit the genuine 200 gee gees but near enough the magic 200 is not silly tough or expensive, beyond then & to get 200 at wheels = much wongo $$

I've driven GVKs VR mk2 on track & another one too, & the bad handling thing is a myth if the conversion is done properly, its no worse handling wise than my trusty mk2 with a 4 pot & so much more torque & ah that noise......

Trying not to be to blatent with an advert here, but if you are after a decent set up mk2 16v with 190bhp on rollers (fly) caged, stripped, proper expensive new built high comp engine, properly spec'd supension etc & utterly relible, tracked all over Europe & UK blah blah blah etc etc drop me a mail, anyway blatent plug over, will be in classified soon, or to be honest might wait till spring to do an advert.

At rest-

& here making that rascal GVK work for his overtake.. wink

Going by GVKs Youtube videos at Donington his VR6mk2 is quick and appears to handle well.

It's not too bad, it is more 'front heavy' than it was with the 16v, and not as adjustable on the throttle as it was either, but still goes well for an old 'un!

I can recommend Langworth Motorsport (on A158 between Wragy and Lincoln). Gawaine and Jason specialise in rally car prep but do track day prep too.

no offence and thanks for the advice but from personal experience i wouldnt piss on them if they were on fire, a bunch of idiots who claim to know lots but in reality know very very little, actually about as much as a haynes manual can tell you..........
