Any ideas for a cheap track day car
Discussion
Seeing as this topic is already open - I hope you don;t mind me parking a question in here.
Reading else where about budget track day cars someone mentioned BMW 318.
I this true? If so I have an old M reg 318 that is really scruffy but good mechanicly. Because off this I don't reckon its worth much to sell. Could she be a track day car?
If so I would love to have a go. I;ve never been and they sound like my idea of heaven.
Thanks guys.

Err so M rge you are talking e36 318 hmm perhaps the most unthrilling car ever to wear a BMW badge so as stock it will be slow & daftly wallowy, hardly ideal, but im sure if you've never tracked before you'd have fun the first time.Reading else where about budget track day cars someone mentioned BMW 318.

The 318 you may have read about most likely is e30 318is= a completly difernet kettle of cucumbers. For 318 the SELOC racers do use the boggo e30 318 & they do lap in suprisignly good times, but even tho stock power- wel a fraction up, they are set up race cars v hard suspension etc not regular road cars.

mx5 are soft tops?...................i see that you can get a hard top for them !!!! but we were thinking of a car with a roll cage in it or to install one ? and its rear wheel drive yeah ?.
Yep, it's a soft top, although you can pick up hard-tops pretty cheaply on ebay, but I doubt you'd go round the track with one on - usually I have the top down. Plenty of friends I know have roll cages/bars fitted in their MX5s - not a problem!Deffo RWD!

You see the thing is im a proper bloke a man!!!!!! and i could never see me driving a MX5 on the road let alone a track!!!! sorry claire !!!! i have a small willy and i need a car with a load of power/muscle to make up for my loss,,, ha

Yup- the 318is, in E30 guise, makes a fantastic introduction to trackdays. A few over enthusiastic owners out there try and value them and 2-3k which is nonsense. 1000-1500 will get you a good one. Light weight, rwd and rather retro-cool.enjoy
for a track and with rear wheel drive to get the best driving experience you need something with a rear LSD fitted.
An MX5 would be good IF it had the LSD fitted otherwise they struggle through the tighter corners. They are a nice driver's car though, but it wouldn't be my first choice.
Try looking at the 200SXs, Sierra XR4i and the BMWs with the LSD fitted.
An LSD makes a massive difference on RWD!

Mine does have a Torsen LSD fitted, and granted they are not on all mx5s, but I have friends whose 5's don't have LSD and they still have a great time on the track. An MX5 would be good IF it had the LSD fitted otherwise they struggle through the tighter corners.
We've in the process of building this:

The nice thing is you can add bits as and when budget allows, but it doesn't stop you from using it and having fun from the off. A stripped out E30 or E36 has got great potential and there are loads of parts available. We went fro the E36 in the end because E30s have gone up in price and it's quite had to find a good, cheap (sub £1K) one. Our plan is to drop an M3 engine in when we can afford it.

glol @ aji - I reckon a sierra would make a blinding track car compared to something like a mx5.
The only place that an lsd is useful for is to help with traction out of slow corners which to be honest isn;t much of an issue with an mx5 anyway as they have not a lot of torque and the other is for going sideways, without an lsd you can still do it, it's just not quite as easy to keep it there. Not really a concern for someone new to track days imho.

oh, and back on topic. I would heartily recommend an mx5. I think you would need to do too much to any of the other barges mentioned to use them on track. There are loads of mx5's used on track with litle to no modifications done to them.
I wouldn;t worry too much about the penis size issue, the only people that would look at you funnily in one are gayers.
Anything heavy will cost loads to run which then negates any advantage in spending £3k compared to £10k. Also, anything heavy will need stripping that much that it will then be rubbish on the road or will need upgrading that much that you may as well have spent £10k in the first place.
