How do I limit noise for a static test ?
Discussion
I have done the search, as I am sure this must have been asked before for other cars, but I still can't find anything....
My Monaro reads 108db on a standard static test (tested twice to be sure)which excludes it from most UK track days. I can change the boxes, to bring it into the high 90's db but this costs and is awkward to reverse.
Is there any quick fix, bolt on or similar to limit noise temporarily for a track day. (Target would be Bedfords 101db static 87db drive by). I may only use this car on track the once to see how it behaves, so I don't want to spend much.
Ideally a generic bolt on solution would good, but if its model specific its a 6.0litre VXR Monaro with a twin pipe Wortec exhaust, although the headers have also been changed which adds to volume !!
Any thoughts appreciated.

That way you wont have go go to your max
No Dave, that way when the locals hear a noise that they *think* is 105dB (when it's actually 108dB or whatever) - they complain that it's too loud and get the limit reduced to 98dB instead. If people stopped taking the f**king p*ss in the first place and got their cars quiet enough then half the noise problems would stop straight away. There is *no* reason why *any* car should need to be more than 98dB static or drive by. That includes radicals, ferraris, jap barges etc etc. I wish people would accept that noise is an issue and sort it out rather than moaning or trying to cheat the system and causing more problems in the process.

He asked a question i gave a answer
it is some advice that was given to me once thats all
both my cars have Never Tripped a sound meter and that not bad going with a 3.9 Mg
and a Subaru and ive also had another Impreza and i made sure that was also with in all limits.
I also do Bike track days with a 1999 Ducati 996Bp fitted with termignoni Pipes oh and too is
fine on the sound checks as well.
Quite a simple way round it at is to follow the example of Bedford
The other week everyone was tested for Noise on the way in to the facility
even before getting to the track.
If you failed you had to make arrangements to repair it before you went on track, if you tripped the meter on track
you were off ... thats it no second chance this way it helped people understand that you don't have to be loud
to gain performance.
Also soon and you may laugh at me but it will happen that tyre noise will be a factor in limits at tracks
if anyone thinks i am mad have a look at the link

Regards as ever Dave not taking life to seriously but having fun

Not quite sure I get the point as a) I know there is a noise problem, b) I am looking to quieten the car c) I am looking to comply with the noise regs not cheat them. There is *no* reason why *any* car should need to be more than 98dB static or drive by. Don't quite get which bit you object to ?
I believe you can buy aftermarket valves that go in your tailpipe to keep things quite.
It basically looks like a throttle butterfly and you just stick your head under the car for 30seconds to turn a screw that moves the butterfly. Some kits are a bit more trick than that and have a motor on them and a controller you mount inside the car. You will need to drill holes in your exhaust to set it up though.
I think the likes od Demon Tweaks can sell various bits and pieces that you just stick in the end of your exhaust.
The other option is to take one of your silencers out and pack it out with silencer wadding (I think most motorsport or kit car suppliers have it)...only thing about this though is that most of it will dissapear out of your tailpipe or burn away pretty quickly so by the middle of the day you might find yourself to noisy again!

Good thoughts, both sound like they could be options. I will get in touch with Demon Tweaks to see whats involved. It basically looks like a throttle butterfly and you just stick your head under the car for 30seconds to turn a screw that moves the butterfly. At 4.5krpm my car was 106db...and Oulton restrict to 105db..although a tiny amount over...I didnt wan't to risk not being aloud on track.
So I got some bolt in tip..that brought it to 94db....and just simply un-bolt it when you wanna go home.
What, where from, and how much??So I got some bolt in tip..that brought it to 94db....and just simply un-bolt it when you wanna go home.
