As well as track days, I will be using the Taz racer for a spot of hill climbing and sprinting. The R888's wouldn't get warm enough to work properly. My question is, what are the "stickyest" class 1A (road tyre) tyres on the market. I am considering T1-R's and having them shaved down to 4mm. Any thoughts on alternatives?

No tyre will get up to temp during a sprint.

go for the softest compound available of whatever u choose.

they won't last long, but will grip.

isn't the Sprint C'ship a control tyre series?

Hi

R888's are list 1B in any case, run them and you'll end up in the Sports Libre class..

You want either the T1-R's or Marangoni Zeta's

If you can get some, Stunner Scudos are popular list 1A tyres but they seem to be discontinued. The Marangoni Zetas are similar but the only person I know who tried them switched back to Stunners. Yokohama A539s are also commonly used.
If you want to run list 1Bs then Toyo do a soft compound R888 (in certain sizes) which I am running on my Caterham. Most of my fellow competitors use Kumho Ecsta V70A in soft compound (having switched from Avon ACB10s which are now banned). If your events allow crossplie tyres then Avon ACB10s in the softest compound are the best you will get. I am told though that the Kunhos are as good as the ACB10s and many of our events last year saw new records set.

The Stunners are indeed discountinued, the Marangoni's are apparently made by the same people, meant to be roughly the same compound, different tread pattern. Stunners were indeed the tyre of choice and can be used in 2008 (added back to the list after complaints re part worn tyres fitted to cars) if you can get old stock might be worth considering - but then you know they'll be a good few months old at best and is that going to age the rubber past the point after which the newer ones would be better.. There wasn't much in it to begin with from those 3..

Most of the championships in my neck of the woods (North West) are pretty strict with the 1A list for anything 'Road going' - which is a pain to be honest as it means we end up with 15" rims to get decent tyres, where do you play?

That'll be good fun, I do the ANWCC series and we normally bump into the TVR's at some point and they always appear well supported. I think your idea of sticking to 1A's is a good bet (assuming your car is road legal?) as if I remember correctly you have some complicated handicapping system involving tyres.

Still getting my head round the rules. Car isn't road legal but can still run on 1A tyres for max handicap (or min?). The TVRCC run to their own rules as far as I can see.
