Alternatives to E36 M3 for tracking
Discussion
As per subject... what tin top cars are good alternatives to the E36 M3 for track days. Nothing wrong with the E36 M3 as such, but I'd just like to consider alternatives.
I want something that I can drive to the track, use as a second car in an emergency, and of course go around the track too. I would prefer something a bit lighter than the E36 M3, I think it would be 1300kg after ripping the interior and other gubbins out. Must be RWD too.
My only though is a Nissan 200SX, anything else worth thinking about?

Porsche 944? Would a 968 be trackable with some work??
968Cs built for the job, ligher & more agile than e36 (standard car vs standard car) & handle utterly beautifully. A lot more ££ then decent m3 tho & when track fettled m3 is the more powerful & quicker car. 944T with the right suspension & brakes & mapping etc is a great bit of kit, GT3 quick if you can pedal well & do-able for under cost of 968cs.phatgixer said:
Chevette HS / HSR
Sumbeam Lotus
RS2000 with twinky
Sierra Cosworth 2wd
in case you'd missed something its now the year 2008, and the above are either long since rotten away, or are restored and worth a fortune (and the 2wd Cosie is now in the middle ground of being unloved and relatively unwanted and typically about to go pop at the first sight of some hard use)Sumbeam Lotus

Look at your name and hang your head

The E36 is hardly a new car (I know, I own and race one) and i think for £5K or so an E36 would cost (for track work) you could pick up some nice old tackle, as per my post. Allright, the Chevette and Sunbeam and RS2000 are a bit old, but mucked about with they are still handy handlers and go alright! And give me an RS500 with 400+ bhp and that will be every bit as quick as modern tackle as it is constructed from tin foil...
