Tracks and Track days in the South East
Discussion
Hello all,
I've finally decided to get of my arse and take the car for a couple of track days this year, except I dont really have a clue where to go.
Can anyone recommend a good beginners session in the south east? Im in Hampshire, so hants, berks, surrey would be ideal, but will travel further if needed.
Need to get myself some insurance too so any recomendations would be helpful (checked and my policy definitly excludes track days)
Oh yes, I've got a tuscan so its not a quiet car, I had its noise level checked at goodwood last year and they said it wasa 119db, will change to the standard cans for the day which should bring it under 115db but has to be a "loud" day!
Cheers
Dave

Goodwood would have been useful, but not a chance with that noise! (its a mixed bag in that the circuit is fast with minimal run-off, but the days there tend to be very relaxed/civilised/(tame?) so its a good place to be starting out)
You'll be lucky to find many days that'll let you run at 115dB though - unsilenced only methinks and there aren't many of them...
You might find this site useful; set it to Cars only and events >=115dB. You'll see there aren't a lot, but it might help:

thanks, I was thinking about this today and I think I made a boo-boo withthe noise levels, (it was abotu 12 months ago I had the car checked!) I now think I was 109Db, and the standard cans should bring it to under 105db, which is good enough for most track days.
Will check out the site now!

cool - that sounds better.
also, if it helps, Bookatrack do a noise meter hire here:

T obe fair, noise readings apparently vary with air pressure, temperature, birds cheeping, phase of the moon and all sorts of stuff. When I tried it (Noble M12 GTO) I read 96-97 on the bookatrack meter, and just scraped in on the 98dB day at goodwood so maybe not all bad
cheers

They measure the noise at 75% of max(redline) revs right? or have I got that wrong?also, if it helps, Bookatrack do a noise meter hire here:

TY
yeah its normally 75% of max rpm, in neutral, with the noise sensor a specific distance/angle from the exhaust exit. Varys a bit from circuit to circuit though - most of the organisers' sites give relevant info though; click on any of the events here for example:

Brands would be a great choice, generous with noise and a beautiful track. They also regularly run "novice" days and evenings. Plenty of TVR's go there so I am sure your car will be fine. There are a few places there you would not want to crash (as 90% of tracks), but drive within yourself and listen to the instructors and you will have a safe and fun time. Maybe an airfield day would be beter first,so you car practise a bit of high speed car control first!

Airfield days are a winner, but in the South East I think you will struggle for venues that accept more than 100dBLast year Lydden Hill run a few of its own track days. The one I went on was pretty good, too. Can't remember the noise situation but there were a few race cars there and I don't remember being tested. That said, it's not really an issue with my car. It's a lovely little track and Paddock is a real buzz.
One thing, though, they don't (or didn't) allow passengers, although they do allow overtaking just about anywhere on the circuit!

Nice site Shane. Why not come slightly north to Snetterton on the 26th march, theres a novice day then, im going for my 1st outing then, if you need a very good cheap hotel in norwich let me know and the wife can arrange something, take a look at the profile picture and it might give you a clue which hotel chain it is..... hehehe

bit far for my first attempt I think, oddly enough I have been invited to a session at Silverstone as a freebie, not got the full story on it yet (or even how much of it is pie in the sky) will have to wait and see.Brands is all booked, and its just the "afternoon" session, so will be a good taster for me, you never know I might not like it!
Going to take at least all of March to get the car properly prepared anyway, time is at a premium for me at the moment, bloody work!
You can be sure I'll be pestering for hotel bookings if/when I do make it up to snetterton, I like the look of that big looooong straight!
