as a first timer, I have looked at Ben Lovejoys great site.
I am thinking of going on a Sunday, either 27th April or 11th May. Aim to get there early.
Any suggestions?
How busy does it get at that time?
Plan to drive over on Sat, stay 1 night & back Sun night. Is that possible?
thanks

You are going to be a bit pushed at that, can you squeeze another night. Do not drive all the way there and straight on to the track. Watch for a while try getting a ride round. Then next day give it some beans. Fantastic place and great atmosphere. You will love it, enjoyhehe

Thanks,
I did wonder if I needed more time. Looks like I need 2 nights min.
How bad is the traffic/standard of driving on track...I have heard horror stories!
Any hotels you can recommend?
cheers

Stay here: http://www.am-tiergarten.de/en/home/

Driving: others with more experience can probably comment better - there will be horror stories anywhere, but there *will* be accidents. You don't have to be involved in them though; stay focused and never forget for a second what you're doing. Seriously though, keep your head, be careful and you'll have the best time of your life!

Take a look at the forums on www.northloop.co.uk

It's where most of the friendly, sensible & knowlegeable Ring enthusiasts seem to hang out...

You can certainly do it, though its a lot of travel for not much track time. If you can stay Sunday night you'll have more track time and on the May date you suggest it will also be open on Monday. I happen to be going then so I have the opening times in my head.

As previously said, take it easy and ask about for passenger laps before you go out - I'm sure most Brit plated cars will be happy to give you a lift. Take a helmet with you - many people will insist you wear a helmet when passengering (I would).

I would also say don't have any ideas about how many laps you'll drive or similar - just go out with the intention of having a good time and driving home.

Of those dates I would say the April date will be quieter though still busy, May 11 I expect, will be heaving.

Even just a few laps of the ring can be both mentally and physically draining - the last thing you'll want to be contemplating is a late night dash for the ferry!

A few beers and a good kip before setting off early Monday morning works for me...

I come back last night, My hotel was about 2 miles from track , 65 euros a night and was excellent . It even has 6 garages to park you car in if you are worried about it, although it was a nice area.

Drove the grand prix circuit too on Sunday and Sabine was in the steak house Sunday night , great weekend.

I just managed to get into the Zurburg Hotel. Everywhere seemed to be full!
I am on the 07.50 Tunnel Crossing on Fri 9th May. with a colleague in another car.
Will be checking out track insurance....does it exist?
Looking forward to this a lot!

Re. insurance there have been posts on here from people saying they have managed to get it, however, please remember it is not legally a track it is a public road, so ...

a) your normal insurance may cover you anyway - read the policy very carefully looking for exclusions like "Nurburgring Nordschleife" or "one-way de-restricted toll roads"

b) if you are not covered and you buy cover separately, remember you need at least third party insurance, traditional track day cover (ie for damage to your own car only) is not appropriate nor does it meet the minimum legal requirement

Anyone still struggling for accom, I can reccommend the Berghotel HoheAcht, a little further out, but its on one of the greatest roads I've ever driven. thumbup

Verrrry cheap, sharing a room with a mate of mine meant it was £25 a night each, including breakfast.. will be staying there again. smile

As for accidents - yep, they happen - a Boxster crashed right infront of me on my first lap... take a good look at the FAQ on northloop and you'll know what to do/what to expect. At the end of the day, everyones there for the same reason, no one likes armco bills and if you drive within your limits you wont crash. Especially if you are considerate of others/ indicate alot and watch your mirrors - it all helps lower the risk... I didnt see another accident from the driving seat, though a few others fell off the track and didnt have any big scares myself.

The Boxster driver was VERY glad I knew what to do in the event of an accident, so I really cannot stress how important the northloop FAQ section is... take it easy and you'll have an awesome weekend. thumbup

Right - thats enough of this praise, for everyone else - its rubbish, dont go - stay at home - certainly dont go to any tourist days with a car or bike, definately dont lap the circuit... just leave it to me.. hehe

Driving in touristenfahrt is definitely a weird experience for the first timer! Always some crashes and always some 'moments'! When I'm instructing I talk all the way through the lap and try and get the student to learn the three danger points first: Adenauer Forst, Wehrseifen and Bergwerk. A novice can crash anywhere, but these three points are almost magnetic! biggrin

Also check the safety guide here for what to do, what not to and to see vids/pics of those who ignore the advice! Scare tactics, but valid! wink
